Maureen, do read the Absolute Basics thread which will tell you how to order and also lots of other basic research help.

Eric has kindly looked up the birth cert ref for you on freebmd.org - which you can use yourself for free.

The details given are the ones you will need to order the cert for £7 from GRO online:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

when you go there, register and then click on the event of the cert - in this case Birth and remember to tick the box that asks if you have the GRO ref (you have, its what is given above). Then follow through the ordering process.

If you have an exact birth date which is correct ? , I think the abandoned outside an orphanage story is unlikely and starting work at 14 was normal for boys then. But you will get the certificate quickly and hopefully find parent names which would be wonderful for your aunt as you can then hopefully folow backwards to find her ancestry.

Maureen,

Whatever way you look at it - a 'prisoner' is a 'prisoner' !!

She is an inmate in His Majesty's Prison !!!

I enjoy the digging and delving into the past but sometimes its sad like this when your aunts father had to be brought up in an orphanage because his mother was in prison! Does is say on cert who his father was, sometime between his birth and 2yrs old he was put in the orphanage, wonder where his father was? Does anyone know if there is anyway to find out about the orphanage in Newcastle? for papers etc

Hopefully someone will be along soon to help, i haven't the foggiest where to look i did google for newcastle orphange and instituitions came up, i'm better leaving it to the experts on here. Yes indeed I do love a good read at interesting stories and would love to find out what she done to end up in prison, I wonder how long she served and did she ever go looking for her son?

Couldn't see her on the 1911. Unfortunately there is this death which at 27 would be the right age.

Deaths Jun 1902
Melody Mary 27 York 9d 27

There are a couple of possibilities on the 1881 census (free to search at www.familysearch.org)
