Hi, can anyone help please.
I am trying to find a way to search the 1881 England Census to find out who lived at the following address: 88 Webber Row, Southwark, Surrey.
My husbands grandfather was born there in 1878, but I cannot find his mother.
Any ideas are very welcome
Thanks Jo

Ancestry isn't returning a result for #88, although there are a lot of other households on Webber Row.

Hang on and we'll see what might be on the image.

Hi

Which Southwark please

There are six different ones listed in the 1881 census for the Surrey area

Could try Familysearch.org

There's a household at 87 Webber Row ...

Okay, on the images the addresses skip from 87 to 91, but there are two households in between, although they seem to be at 87 as well, from the single (rather than double) line between them.

87 has William Lambert with Mary, Arthur, Lilian and Albert.

Then there is John Boudry, with Eliza and Charlotte.

Then Frederick Garwood, with Eliza, Frederick, Eliza and Louisa.

91 has N.K., aged 50, with N.K. aged 20 and N.K. aged 16, all female.

Just to clarify - there are even-numbered addresses in order on that page too: 86 and 92.

# 88 doesn't show up on the previous or next page.

Do you want to pass on the names for help searching for them?

Oh, and -- are you sure you're reading 88 correctly? Might not be 83 or 85 or some such?

Hi thanks all for your help.

The thing is my husbands grandfather was illegitimate. I have him on the 1881 census as a boarder. I got his birth certificate to get his mothers name which is Esther Catlin a Dressmaker, at the time the birth cert says 88 webber row. Southwark. The district on the cert is St saviour, surrey. I'm wondering if it is some sort of mothers home or something.

Is that any help?

Josette

Josette Report 25 Feb 2009 22:32

James Henry the son is living in St. Saviour area as a boarder not with his mum. That address is violet st. but i have that on census.

Just trying to find his mum to go back on her side.

Thanks again

p.s. His mothers name is Esther Catlin

Ah. The results I got for address Webber were in Southwark St George Martyr, London.

Possibly not the same street? Webber Row, though. It would seem odd for there to be two with the exact same name.

EvieBeavie Report 25 Feb 2009 22:39

No results at Ancestry for Webber, Southwark St Saviour.

For address Web* there is only Webbs Place, consisting of four households.

Ancestry did not always transcribe street names correctly, of course, and if it screwed it up for the first household they would likely all have the same problem.

I do imagine the one I looked at is the right one, though.

Do you want to find her marriage yourself at FreeBMD?

Just search for

catlin*
esther

and there are only a handful, and you'll be able to spot the right one.

Coming up with the same info as Evie

The only Webber Row I have found has a Webber Street coming off it and is not far from Waterloo Station.

Familysearch I found is the quickest way to search addresses but also found no 88, although there are a lot of families living either side.

Good Luck

Catch up, JoJo!

Do you have full Ancestry access?

If not, I'll give you the 1901 for Esther. Eliminated one husband shown in the list at FreeBMD by finding him with the other bride, can't find Esther and her husband in 1891 so far, but have them in 1901. With multiple kids.

Josette

Josette Report 25 Feb 2009 22:52

thanks very much for that both of you.

that looks good on the census for Catlin Evie, but I have no real way of knowing if its the esther i want.

Darklord esther wasn't married when she had James Henry and it looks as if she gave him up as he was a boarder with the same family until he himself married.

How did you find 88 webber row on the familysearch darklord i cant find it lol

Josette

Josette Report 25 Feb 2009 22:54

sorry for delay lol been trying to search familysearch with no luck lol

No I don't have full ancestry sorry.

EvieBeavie Report 25 Feb 2009 22:58

Well ... since your Esther isn't at 88 Webber in 1881, and there appears to be no 88 Webber in 1881 ... there will be no way to know which Esther Catlin-like person was yours.

But Esther Catling is the only person in the 1871 or 1881 who remotely resembles your Esther Catlin ... and is a perfect match except for the missing "g" on your person's name, something very easily explained by pronunciation ... I'd be rather hesitant to dismiss her. In fact, I'd be quite certain that is her.

If you check the 1901 and get the kids' names -- and there may well be more by 1911 -- you might some day be able to find family members with some knowledge.

EvieBeavie Report 25 Feb 2009 22:59

Here you go then! 1901:

Name: Esther Slatter
Age: 39
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Joseph
Where born: London, England

Name: Joseph Slatter
Age: 59
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Esther
Where born: Coventry

Civil Parish: Portland
Ecclesiastical parish: St John the Baptist
County/Island: Dorset

Registration district: Weymouth
Sub registration district: Portland

Joseph Slatter 59
Esther Slatter 39
Bessie Slatter 9
Thomas Slatter 7
Alice Slatter 4
William Slatter 1

I wasn't finding her in 1881, but found the Joseph Burley groom with wife Catherine, the other bride on the page, so Esther had to be married to Joseph Slatter.
