If the Dinah Proctor I am looking at in 1911 is the right one, she had sister and mother Mary , so it is posssible that they registered the death of 'Dinah' in the name May ( diminutive of Mary) if they changed mind on name. I think I would be inclined to get that death cert and see what it says?

yes her mum was called mary and her sister too i will try that but can they do that if they registered the birth in the name dinah ? Rambling Rose

Curiously if you look at the original for Dinah's birth on FreeBMD there is no Dinah there. At least I can't see it. However I can't see May either.

I think it's possible, not sure they would have had to produce a birth cert to register the death? and may just have registered in the name the baby was known by...worth a try anyway, unless anyone else can find a birth to match that death?

Potty Report 28 Jul 2014 13:28

Oddly, James and Dinah seem to have had a sister called May b 1914 (can't see a birth for a Mary, though). Also, no birth for a May (or Mary) who would have been the right age for the 1918 death. No birth for a "female" either.

The registrar would have just asked for the child's name and age - doubt if he would have asked to see the birth cert. Also, it is possible that the name has been entered incorrectly in the Index.

Margee, the birth is on freebmd, on the same page as James's but the MMN is different, by one letter. Dinah has Proctor and James Procter. It is mis-transcribed on Ancestry (it is a very poor image):

Carolina, I am not certain about English death certificates at that time but I do know that some Scottish certificates have an (I) primary cause of death and (II) for secondary or contributory causes.
