Yes, have spent a fortune on Scotland's People but unable to find birth or more mysteriously - death...

Really strange as just had a look at Scotlandspeople and now understand why you thought Glasgow as place of birth.

Peter Comrie McNiven b1899 Glasgow but have not checked cert for names of parents

I'm now wondering if he was born in Perth like his siblings...I know he married at St Aloysius' Chapel in Garnethill. I've recently returned from a trip there.

Perhaps his middle name was added after the birth was registered.

When did the parents marry - just in case he was born a Barclay

Good luck with the search

Unsure when parents married :-( all I know is that they were both deceased by the time of his marriage to Alice Murray Scott (my Grandmother) in April 1927.
Other information I have is his Paternal Grandfather was John who married Isabella (Robertson?)
Maternal Grandfather was John or George Barclay who married Ann McDonald.

Wow Helen, thank you. Does the information you have found, give any detail as to who registered the death? I wish I could find Peter Jnr's death between 1927 and 1932...

I didn't actually view the certificates.

Just checked on the index ... by process of elimination was able to narrow down the dates and locations.

I've looked for the birth and death of Peter McNiven using different spellings and combinations of names. No sign of him.

A mystery !

You can see my dilemma...I am left wondering how my Grandmother married as a 'widow' in 1932 when I can't find any evidence of a death...a wild guess would suggest that he was not in fact dead. I have been looking for deaths in Glasgow because that's where they married and that's where they lived. How she met my Grandfather (who was from London) is another mystery...

Helen

Helen Report 4 Jul 2009 19:27

Did it say on her marriage certificate she was a widow ?

Previously married to Peter McNiven (Presuming she re-married in Scotland)

Hi Helen
2nd marriage in 1934 (sorry, I said 1932 before) took place in Woolwich, London on 24th August.
Frederick John Mckenna (Batchelor) aged 29 years of 39 Hylton Street, Plumstead to Alice McNiven (Widow) aged 26 years of the same address. My Dad was born in 1932 which means that Peter McNiven was insignificant by the beginning of 1931 - so a short lived marriage to Alice Murray Scott for whatever the reason.

Thought maybe Peter and Alice may have moved down to England after they were married ... so looked for a death for Peter there.

Possible:

Jan/Feb/Mar 1930
Peter (W) McNiven (I know Peter's middle name was Cyril)
age 35yrs (Born c.1896)

District: Paddington
Volume 1a
Page 95

Worth keeping in mind considering Alice married in England.
