Yes, that is Lewis. His father seems to have variously called him Louis also. Don't know why. Tracking his RC birth cert was made more interesting in that it is in Latin where he was called Ludovicus.

I had to understand how to read that list -- sorry!

It makes some kind of sense now. Some time ago, it was suggested to me that there was perhaps something strange about Mary's birth (the lack of her parents' names), that she was camouflaging marriage details. I was puzzled that I could only find Martha Jr. in any records.
Mary converted to the RC faith at some point, and the RC church pointed out that the IGI record baptismal name might be incorrect. Also that if her mother had married later on she would assume the surname of her adopted father but use her original birth surname at her own marriage (also suggested by this panel), but the details of birth place at least would be correct. But finding a Mary fulfilling all this has not been so easy.

Can you give the full 1851 census listing of this Ellis family, please?
It may not be significant but Mary was noted as a domestic servant on the marriage certificate

Anthony

Anthony Report 7 Jul 2009 14:39

I just checked the IGI print out, Martha's husbands name was given as William E. Miss, that could well be a misread Ellis

Anthony

Anthony Report 7 Jul 2009 14:35

Jim, Do you have more on that, can you note any further details?
An illeg. christening in Sedgley of a daughter to Martha Fryer is listed in the IGI on 27.08.1843. IGI also lists a marriage of (the same?) Martha to William E. Moss on 10.11.1844. The daughter was noted as being christened Martha also, but that could be incorrect.

Joan's 1881 is a better bet than the one I found, as that family are together on the 1871.
