Stuart Report 22 Jul 2009 19:49

Looking for the parents and origins of James London, born 4 Jan 1891, ostensibly in London.

Can find a James London (b 1891) living with his brother Henry (b 1880, married to an Alice ??????) and sister Frances (b1894) in the 1911 census at 9 Melton Street, St Pancras.

Cannot find any of them in previous censuses.

Notice in the census that it states Henry was born in London, St Luke. However in the column after that it says British Subject (strange!!)

Does this mean he was actually born outside of the UK and aquired British citizenship somehow ?

Can anyone shed some light on where they might have originated ?

Liz,

Fantastic. That is a match for Mary Tomkins parents, and pretty close for James London's parents. I have her birth cert for 18 Feb 1893 with those parents.

Can you see any children from the Mary Tomkins_James London marriage ??

There's a death in York Ontario of John Patrick London, born 19 Jan. 1928, Canada, died 31 Dec. 1928, York, Ontario, Canada, age 11 months. Parents are James London & Mary Tompkins.

Stuart

Stuart Report 23 Jul 2009 13:10

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for your response.

John, John Patrick, Patrick, and Patrick John run the family as christian names (on the Clifford side, Mary's mother).

Also the parents names of John London and Mary Tompkins is not a mile away from what is on the marriage cert Liz found.

It does seem a long while after the marriage ( 1913) though !!
Anyway all things are possible.

Stuart

No contraception readily available then Stuart - people carried on producing children until they were no longer able to or died.

Hi All,

Well if you are looking for a name in the census searches this will be an eyeopener.

I was looking for the Abraham London and his wfe Amelia London.

In the 1901 census they turn up as Lendon

In the 1891 census they turn up as Londorn

In the 1881 census they turn up as Sondon

Little wonder searching the archives is such a time consuming past time

I have requested corrections for all three entries at Ancestry.co.uk.
See what happens !!

Did you see Abes parents above?

Stuart

Stuart Report 23 Jul 2009 20:43

Hi Heather,

Thanks for all the info. Some of it I had gleaned from the census reports and Free BMD site. The second marriage is a possiblility.

I guess you professionals have access to all the good sites and documents !!!

Its been a fascinating excursion over the years, and have met up with some wonderful people ready to share their experiences.

The Canadian side of the family now seems very interesting. I may have to splash out some money and access some of theit archives.

My ultimate goal is find the wherabouts of Margaret Clifford after the 1911 census.

Stuart
