Well that puts the cat amonst the pigeons. I was contacted by someone convinced her Sarah was the one born Evenlode. I had presumed but not confirmed her dead by 1841. I had not found her in 1841 although she had not departed for Australia. A death would confirm she is not the Evenlode one. I think there are connections to the Devon Braggintons but I am not convinced that some of the trees out there are correct.

So Sarah was not looking for her father,
In fact I think now it is highly likely she died as she is not in 1841 census.

A relative of the Sarah that married Balchin had contacted us saying she was born Evenlode but it seems she was mistaken so I have removed the Balchins from my tree.

So just Thomas,

I asked to meet up with the author of the book this week but he made it clear he was busy.I need to know his sources.

Poss Thomas Mathew BRAGINTON m 14 Mar 1820 Saint Olave, Exeter, Devon England, Elizabeth TICKELL [IGI Batch M050491 extracted from parish records]

Who is this Sarah BRAGINTON who was born in Cornwall abt 1822 and emigrated to Australia in 1844?
Her marriage in 1849 in South Australia to James BALCHIN was witnessed by John and Elizabeth SCOWN.
Further evidence of a family connection is the fact that her death notice in the Adelaide Chronicle in 1907 gave her name as Sarah Matthews BALCHIN.
Perhaps she was a child of Thomas BRAGINGTON and therefore a niece of Susanna Dinnis.
Or ... if Sarah was a child of Susanna born out of wedlock this could explain why Susanna did not marry until she was 36 years of age.

Wow thanks everyone.

I had no luck at Stow in the Wold today.
The librarians were unfriendly and did not know where there own things were. The fiche drawer was unlabelled and useless.
I am going to have to enquire at Gloucester archives on line. I did get to visit Aston blank today which is where Hester was born.

Back to Thomas

I have the date of his christening and have put his Dob as approximately 06/07/1782.

"1819 admitted to Gloucester prison farm labourer aged 24. Sentenced in August of that year and deported for life on the ship Neptune ! to New South Wales in Australia." comes from the book

Perhaps the author of the book misread the records? I have been given his phone number .

I can see that Bragginton becomes Brassington by someone readind the records as opposed to hearing the name and writing it down. Brassington is also a name in use though.

This is the census info for Thomas son Samuel

Went looking again for missing children but no more came up.Perhaps they were not registered. A few marriages later with father as James Balchin- so with some work they could be found.

Sounds like some family were living in Victoria-"Melbourne papers please copy"

Just had a look on Ancestry at the original transportation register for 1818-1820. Thomas Brassington come up. On the original his name looks like it is spelt Bragington. In that old fashioned lettering where the "s" looks like an "f" or a "g". The handwriting is beautifully clear. Makes me wonder if this is the correct Thomas after all.

AuntySherlock Report 28 Jul 2009 12:39

Christine you need to do some serious sorting. The dates of birth, ages given at his conviction and dates and ages of death do not add up.

If we are looking at someone who was 24 in 1819 his date of birth would be 1795.

If he was christened in 1782 he would have been about 37 in 1819.

If he was born in 1795 his age at death in 1858 would be 63. You can't mistake an 80 year old for 63.

If he arrived in Aust in 1820 and died in 1858 in Australia the 1881 census data can not be him. That would have to be his grandchildren's information. That Thomas Bragginton would have been born in c1846.

I can find no evidence that he received a conditional pardon. I am not certain Thomas Brassington is the same person. He came to Aust on a different ship and in a different month. (His ship I think was Neptune 3, your TBs was Neptune 1) If you would like to take that search further try this site. An awful lot of the info is only available for looking at in the reading room.

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/

Look at the online indexes/historical records.

I have already searched and apart from finding his name as coming to Australia in 1820 have drawn a blank.

I have asked Kerri on the Records Office board to do a search of South Australian records. That should give us the fate of Sarah and whether Thomas joined her.
Do you know that Sarah was your Thomas's daughter. I immediately assumed she was his wife.

How much of the info on the thread fits into what you know about the family. Give us a summary so we know which track to follow.

I am going to search WA and QLD records for any evidence of the family between 1820 and 1858
OK Nothing shows in West Aust or Queensland for the family.

I am in contact with a descendant Of Sarah. At first I thought she died after 1841 but found no trace. When I found she went to Australia I thought it strange that a young girl from the middle of nowhere would go all that way on her own. And she could read and write. The school did not open until 1841 although there was a school mistress in the village in the 1841 census.
It was not until this week that I got a clue as to what happened to Thomas and a possible reason for Sarah going. I do not think she would have realised just how vast Australia is.
It is my last day up here. Back to work tomorrow. I am going to Stow in the Wold library this morning to try to find the Evenlode papers. Then back to London. I have collected lots of pictures and got a feel for the area so not a wasted trip.

This states she came as an assisted immigrant (the gove paid her passage). She landed at Port Phillip Bay which is in Melbourne Victoria in 1844. The ship she sailed on was the Lord William Bentinck.

You are able to order a copy of the document. Not certain yet what it looks like. Will find out.

It is certainly not a common name and he was the only one in Evenlode.
The book cites the Evenlode papers as its source hence my unsucessful trip to Gloucester. It would be a remarkable coincidence if two Thomas Braggintons of different ages were deported on the same ship at the same time. Unfortunately the book was written from a local history point of view not a family history point of view.

Ann correctly identified his baptism and he was married by license 1804
His children were born between 1812 and 1817. From my understanding the village had a very clearly defined system of "haves" and "have nots".
Mine were definitly the have nots.

Thank you so much for searching for me Julie.

Name: Thomas Braggington
Arrival Date: 1820
Vessel: Neptune
Fleet: Second
Piece: HO 10/32
Province: New South Wales
Title: General muster A-C
Year(s): 1837

Rats ! !
The original definitely has his age at 57, no error there.
Unless the error was back in 1820 and originally recorded wrong.
