would his name be Micheal William Woods and th4e district be Stoke Damerel??? Confused as he is listed as George Micheal Woods in most other places - Lynn

I have a birth cert from Stoke Damerel in the county of Devon for George but the parents are William and Mary Ann Maddeford, born in 1862 vol 05b page 313
and one for George with the parents of Richard Woods and Priscilla (hard to read) from Tavistock in the county of Devon. 1867.vol 05b page 378
Not sure as to what year as he was born seems like his death cert says he was 37 years old in 1903 and the undertakers cert says that he was 39

Can you list the birth certs you have purchased.

Seems unlikely he and Rosa actually married as she marries Alfred May under her maiden name.

I have tried to order the birth cert. for Mary Woods but GRO says it isn't there. I have encountered this before and was wondering what my next step is????

I was sure that I saw the May family in the Canadian census and have been looking for them for days. Rose May did sign my grandmothers marriage cert. in 1915 and I have her death cert from Canada. According to family, they lived in Corbin BC for a short time and then moved to the Nelson area. I have found some of them on the Canadian passenger lists arrivind in Quebec Oct 22 1909, John Woods (May) and Alfred May seem have arrived at a different time.

Still can't find them on the 1911 census in Canada.

The dates on the births of the Woods family correspond to what I have and looking forward to ordering the certs. Anyone have any luck on the marriage of John Woods and Rose. I see that she used her maiden name when she married Mr May, so maybe they didn't marry. She and my grandmother were very strong in the catholic faith that it is hard to beleive that they didn't marry or did that happen in those times??? Many thanks all

Your findings are awsome. Where did you find all this out? Would love help with Rose's family? Was there any children from George and Jane Woods before she died? And can you find my grandmothers birth cert, it has been quite elusive, she was born April 25 1895. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Woods, You are terrific.

In answer to your question about the family census in 1911. They are there under the name of May as they came to Canada with Alfred May and his 3 children. I can't find a marriage cert for Rose Woods or Hill and Mr May. According to the family the first Mrs May died in UK.

As an answer to your question re John Micheal Woods being George Woods father, I'm going on verbal family history. My aunt has a receipt for George's funeral and she said that it was his father. But looking to prove it somehow???.
I am in Canada to explain the delay getting back to you as I am assuming that you are in the UK.

I kept coming back to the Michael William born 1864 in Stoke Dameral also,and it is just next door to Devonport really.
Only one way to find out ,buy the cert.

And he does not appear to have legally wed Rose for some reason as none of us have been able to find their marriage.

Maybe she was married to someone else and couldnt legally marry Mr Woods?

You still didnt answer my question on how you know that George Michael woods father was John Michael if you dont have a marriage cert for him.
