Joseph Workman & Mary ?

GlitterBaby Report 27 Oct 2009 15:11

Which couple are they in 1901 ? The one in Pershore ? if yes then there is a possible marriage in Pershore in 1896. Probably not as wrong area

If not then which family are you looking at in 1901

Glitterbaby is right - we need a little more, such as the 1901 census or at least a child's name. How do you know the year of marriage?
.There aren't too many Joseph Workmans around so if he married it should be possible to find him.

Thank you.

In 1901 - Joseph is away in Marylebone , London at Dentistry School.

He & his wife Mary (?) had a child in 1899 called Ada Lily. I havent found them yet on the 1901, but suspect they will either be in Dursley ( Josephs home town - Josephs father - also called Joseph, was a Weslyan Mnister ) or Williton, Somerset - Marys home town.

I am trying to find out more about Mary - particularly her surname & more about her family etc.

mmmmmm.

I really appreciate you looking for me, but neither of them sound right......

I really believe that given Josephs father was a Minister of the church, it would be highly unlikely that they married AFTER, their daughter was born. Also, I would be surprised if it wasnt in Dursley ( and Joseph Snr could have been the minister in charge )......
Perhaps they married before 1898?

Joseph was born in 1874 - so anytime after 1892 perhaps?

did you get Joseph & Mary's details from the 1911 census?

If so please could you list it for us or if not where did you get your information from.

I can't find a Joseph Workman on the 1881 census born c1874 in Gloucetsershire (with or without a father Joseph). There are a surprising number of Joseph Workman's, mainly born Worcestershire

edit FMP is the site Find My Past

If you get the birth cert for Ada Lily, it will give you her mothers maiden name and help in tracing the marriage.

How do you know Joseph and Mary are her parents if you don't have the cert.

This is the marriage possibility Glitter Baby mentioned at the beggining of the thread, why could it not be a possibility?

People married all over the place...I have quite a few in my tree who married in neither of the couples birthplace or family area......

I think you really need to get Ada Lilys birth cert. to confirm mothers maiden name.

Here is the birth of the daughter of Joseph Workman & Mary (?)
Births Dec 1899
Workman Ada Lily Dursley 6a 279

I therefore assumed that Joseph & Marys marriage would have likely taken place a year earlier c 1898.

I know that Josephs father ( also called Joseph) was a Weslyan Church Minister from Dursley (but moved around a lot )
I know that Joseph was a dentist.
In 1901 census - Joseph is away, training in London at Dentist School.
I assumed that he had said he was single - as he was 'on his own' in London at the time of the Census.

This is Joseph as a child with his parents & siblings in :
1881 Census: In South Petherton, Somerset
Joseph WORKMAN Head M Male 43 Dursley, Gloucester, England Wesleyn Minister
Mary WORKMAN Wife M Female 43 Williton, Somerset, England
Edith WORKMAN Daur Female 13 Crewe, Cheshire, England Scholar
Blanche WORKMAN Daur Female 11 Chorley, Lancashire, England Scholar
Alice Maud WORKMAN Daur Female 9 Chorley, Lancashire, England Scholar

Joseph WORKMAN Son Male 7 Mold, Flint, Wales Scholar

Henrietta GRANGER Serv U Female 26 Sth Petherton, Somerset, England General Servant Domestic
Dwelling Palmer Street

As said previously you really need the birth cert for Ada Lily.

How do you know that Joseph and Mary are the parents if you don't have the cert.

1911 Census

Searched for a Joseph Workman b. 1874 +/- 1 yr, occupation Dental Surgeon

HOUSEHOLD WORKMAN JOSEPH M 1874 37 St George London

There doesn't appear to be any other Workmans in the same household.

I would have a look at that census if I were you. How can you be sure that he married please? Are you certain that he had children? Could the Joseph that was the father of Ada Lily be another Joseph - perhaps a cousin of your Joseph?

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 28 Oct 2009 15:47

Also wondering why you think they would have gone back to Dursley as they hadn't lived there for many years but Joseph the minister was born there.
