Sarah Report 7 Nov 2009 20:06

Hi,
I'm trying to trace my Nana's family. She was born in Eastchurch in 1922. Her name is Gweneth, King (now Brett). She told me her parents names were Thomas King (1882?/1964) and Emily Howting. There are a lot of Kings and Howtings from Eastchurch and I wondered if anyone could help me pinpoint exactly the family line. I've come up with a few variants but I don't want to get a couple of names wrong and end up going off on a tangent!!!

Many thanks

Sarah

One child born out of wedlock??
or it looks as though Howting may be his middle name
And not brilliant transcribing of the christian names..

Hi Vivienne,

My Nana's dad was definitely Thomas Aaron King. It's Emily that I'm having more trouble with.
My mum has spoken to my nan on the phone but she's a bit deaf so we're having trouble finding out her brothers and sisters names!
Thank you for the info. I will get my mum to shout the names at her next time she phones!

Many thanks again

Ooh maybe that's why my nan was being so vague on the phone! She kept that quiet! That would've been a massive deal in those days I'm guessing.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Nov 2009 21:07

Pretty much...

But very strange that they listed him as Howting on 1911 and didnt change his name to King as he appears to be both of their child going on the middle name of King!

Maybe they did later and your nan didnt know.

Sarah

Sarah Report 7 Nov 2009 21:10

That's what's confusing me so much. There are tiny errors when I search that make me second guess myself. I wish there was a definitive way to search that could confirm every detail that comes up in other searches. Sometimes the census doesn't match the birth date etc.
It's really starting to confuse me!

Thanks for all you're doing to help. It's greatly appreciated

Have you seen the 1911 image? if not you should, there is something of interest on it

Did you correct the Howting spellings on Ancestry?

Census are more often than not out in the ages as people had so many kids that they guessed a lot of the time at ages, also a lot of them were illiterate and the census taker just wrote what he thought he heard!

Sarah

Sarah Report 7 Nov 2009 21:18

I haven't corrected any spellings. I had no idea you could do that.

Where would I find the 1911? It only goes up to 1901 on here doesn't it?

Thank you

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Nov 2009 21:23

If you didnt correct the spellings then someone else is tracing Emily or one of her siblings for a family tree.

This site does not hold any records, you pay them to send you to other sites.
You are better off looking at other sites.
But first the 1911

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

You will need to register and then buy credits to view, but searching is free.

If you send me your email by private message I will try to send you the image as I subscribe to Find my Past and have it as part of my package.
Im not very good at sending attatchments though as I have only just learnt how and it often goes into cyberspace somewhere I think.

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Nov 2009 21:27

Do you mind if I send the image to someone more experienced on here for a second opinion and to see what they make of it as it is a bit baffling to me?

Sarah

Sarah Report 7 Nov 2009 22:05

No that's absolutely fine

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Nov 2009 22:09

2nd opinion in..

BS by parentage means born outside the UK to British parents who conveyed their citizenship to the child. Actually it would only have been the father's-side parentage that counted.

Hardly makes sense in this case since they were all British born.

Is that the form filled out by the householder? A confused householder maybe, who thought it had to be filled out with something.

Whom it seems to apply to is Emily Elizabeth, since it's scrunched and starts on her line, although it could conceivably be meant to apply from her down.

Dunno. If she wasn't born abroad, which it says she wasn't, why say that?

That first kid is registered as Edward King HOWTING in Sheppey. Is that actually a name? I don't see a birth for Emily Elizabeth as such ... Oh yeah, it's a real Sheppey name. She's Emily Howting reg Jun Q 1884 presumably born March.

So I have no idea why nationality would come into it. I'd say Mr King over-read the form.

Thank you Janey..
I see what you mean ,but why only apply it to Emily if he thinks he should put nationality down?
No answer to that I guess..

Oh well now -- will I get a footnote then? ;)
(ah, you edited and credited!)

Viv, did you not look at Ancestry to see who did the correction and what they said??

click on the Additional Info link over on the left, or on the name in square brackets. Here, allow me -- the actual correction is on the father's name and applied to the other household members.

Right. The person who made the correction didn't say word one. May be somebody completely unrelated who happened to see it (I do that all the time - but I always say I'm not related), or a close family member (when I correct my own family I say what my connection is and invite contacts).

The correction was made in April 2004 and the member last logged in to Ancestry last week. If you subscribe at Ancestry, all you have to do is go to the Edward Howling record in 1901, click on the corrected name, click on the username, and click "contact" to send a message.

Is 'Ancestry' more comprehensive than this site?

If so, I'm signing up now!
