Derek Report 31 Jan 2013 18:16

Hello Joan.......I don't think this marriage took place in church.....It was Registered in the belper Reg. District (which includes Alfreton) JAG 1875..........but does not appear in the Alfreton Parish records of Weddings......which means that the only place you're going to get the precises information you require is by purchasing a copy of the Birth Certificate.....

However..I know this family very well, and i know the area in which they lived and died even better........I was actually in Alfreton this afternoon......I can tell you a few bits and bobs as background information.........

MARY CARLIN was baptised at Alfreton 28.12.1857..and died there is 1914

WILLIAM SHOOTER was born 1854 and died at Alfreton Dec 1915

William and Mary live in Birchwood Lane in 1881 by which time they had two children Annie Ethel and William.......the interesting thing is that the whole family appears to have lived either on or close to Birchwood lane for many years.

William Shooter's father William died on Birchwood Lane in 1887..and you probably know of the will in which he left his property to his wife Hannah..a Gold watch to his son William and a silver watch to his son George.........and he mentions his granddaughter ADA SHOOTER ABSALOM......which sparked my interest as being possibly a child of William and Mary..

BUT my research uncovers the fact that Ada is the daughter of William's sister ELIZABETH..and her husband ROBERT ABSALOM.....

WILLIAM SHOOTER and MARY CARLIN.....and his sister ELIZABETH SHOOTER and ROBERT ABSALOM....were actually married on the same day in 1875......I suggest at Alfreton register office.

I have loads more on thsi family if you need more help.

Derek.

Arthur Report 1 Feb 2013 12:40

Hi. Derek,
Arthur here again.
Since I got in touch with you I have discovered that Edwards father, Augustine/Austin Cupit was married to Elizabeth Marriott in 1819.
She died and he married Elizabeth Chapman.
I don't know if this is correct because it was off someones tree.
I did not mention at the time but I have the marriage certificate of Edward Cupit and Mary Mellors, I did not want to burden you with too much to start with.
The next bit of info I have is that Austin's parents were Austin Cupit and mary Siddall but again I am not sure if this is true.
Also, hope I am not boring you. I have made contact this last few days with a Man in Austalia who's grandmother was Sofia Cupit who was related to a George Cupit
from Higham.
Thats enough for now for you to digest.
Thanks for your interest and if I have any info that can help you or others then I'm
here.
Regards
Arthur

Hi Derek
I'm wondering if you have any news for me regarding the burial of Mary Holmes who died aged 72 in Stokes Yard, Chesterfield, you said you would have to go to the Records Office to look for it.

Also I asked if you could look for the death of James Hutchinson b 1756, his wife Catherine died in 1841 aged 82 and she was a widow then, she died in West Barr but I believe she lived in Brampton.

Any news would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Kath

HI Derek,

I hope you don't mind me adding to your thread with info for Joan.

According to the parish records on FMP, the marriage between William Shooter and Mary Carlin took place at St James at Riddings.

Hiya Derek.

Having solved a mystery on hubby's tree, I'm now looking for the parents of:

John Hickinbottom born c1787 in Sandiacre, Derbyshire.

He ?marries/dies in Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire. Would love to find siblings as well if possible.

Ta in anticipation m'duck.
Joy

Derek Report 2 Feb 2013 13:19

Hi Joy........Sandiacre PR'S give only one Hickinbottom of that time..and since its so close to the date you mention. I suspect that if John had been baptised at Sandiacre he would have been in the records......but if not, then the following is at least a possible brother:

WILLIAM HICKINBOTTOM baptise Sandiacre 27.071788 son of Thomas and Elizabeth...........

........there is no Hickinbottom marriage at Sandiacre in the 20 years or so before this baptism..........

I'll keep looking for a bit.

Derek.

Hi Derek.

Hope all is well and you are now feeling much better.

Do your records cover the areas of Tutbury, Smisby and Oakthorpe or are they Staffordshire/Leicestershire.

I have got a really good one here, just the sort you like.......lol.... I could do with some help with confirming baptisms, fathers if possible and marriages. Lots of illegitimate children, transportation etc but seem to keep hopping across the county boundaries.

No pressure Derek when you are ready.

Susan :-)

Joan Report 2 Feb 2013 16:00

Hi Derek,
Does this mean that you will be able to find the marriage of Wiiliam Shooter/Mary Carlin now we know it was at St James. Riddings 1875. Please?

Derek Report 2 Feb 2013 16:30

Susan..try me!! ;-)

Derek

Derek Report 2 Feb 2013 16:50

Hello Joan..I'm afraid it doesn't because the FMP entry offered by mt friend Chrissie..is in fact simply the Register Office entry from the belper registration District..doesn't even give a date other than 1875..but does St James Riddings.

I am not able to go to Matlock yet to see the Riddings records..so it remains as was.....the marriage certificate......which..if you go direct to GROat Southport, on ly cost £9.25....and includes all the details you asked fro..date, address, parents names and witnesses..

Thanks Derek......

give me a couple of days to work through the stuff I need help with. I don't want to send you off on a wild goose chase looking for stuff I may already know.

I know some of the family are out of your area and I have been trying to confirm Warwickshire baptisms and marriages on ancestry and by purchasing certs.

This one is a mess but fascinating !

Will get back very soon.
Thanks
Susan :-D

Thanks for trying anyhow Derek :-)

lilliesnan Report 5 Feb 2013 17:29

Hello Derek

At last found some time to get back to you......hope this one doesn’t cause you a headache !!

ELIZABETH WARD born about 1793 / 1796 at Tutbury, Staffordshire/Derbyshire........parents....UNKNOWN
She went on to marry JOHN CASHMORE (born about 1796 maybe Ashby?) in Smisby 17 Sept 1816, this date has not been confirmed. Children of marriage (I think........?) Elizabeth Cashmore 1829, William Cashmore 1830 , Luke Cashmore 1833 and Maria Cashmore 1837..... Maybe more I don’t know.
EIizabeths husband JOHN CASHMORE was transported to VDL in 1836 for stealing an anvil. I don’t know if John ever returned to UK after he was pardoned in 1846...as I have been unable to find a death apart from a 3 week old child by the same name in 1847....

Quite simples so far.......ok......this is where it gets a bit messy.......

ELIZABETH WARD, above, had a daughter......... LEAH WARD born 1816 in Smisby.....Father possibly JOHN CASHMORE or JOHN SMITH ?

LEAH WARD (1816) married Nathanial Clamp at Donnisthorpe in 1841, she died in 1903. They went on to have 2 children I am aware of.....Elizabeth 1842 and Elijah 1843. ........However.........oh no I hear you sigh...........

LEAH born 1816 also had a child out of wedlock....... also named LEAH WARD but born 1835, possibly in Oakthorpe.... Father was JOSEPH WHITE according to her wedding cert to JOHN SANDERS NEWBOROUGH at Austrey in 1855. JOHN SANDERS NEWBOROUGH parentage is also complicated but not really relevant except to say he alternated between using Sanders and Newborough as his surname.........thats it, you have guessed the rest.. lol

Am looking at the Cashmore family ........There are two children listed on the 1851 census, Maria Cashmore born 1849 maybe Ashby? and Eli Cashmore born about 1843/4 Oakthorpe...I am curious as to who’s children they are as they are very close in age to Elizabeth’s (1793) children and wonder if they should be listed as daughter and son instead of grandchildren.........a comment has been added to the census on a******y indicating that the children are those of Mary Cashmore and father unknown and the oldest was born at Ashby workhouse.

Can you confirm that MARY was the daughter of ELIZABETH WARD AND JOHN CASHMORE?
Any additional siblings would be even better. Not sure where children were born - maybe Smisby or Oakthorpe but its a guess.

Any additional information you could dig up with regard to the CASHMORE’S especially JOHN and his parentage would be terrific............BUT don't worry too much if you cant help as I know your records may not include the relevant parishes.

Thanks for taking the trouble to look anyway. Sorry for giving you a bad’un.

Hi Derek

How are you???

I wondered if your records might extend to Basford on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border????

An Australian contact has asked if I might be able to help her find more details on the following marriage before she buys the certificate

Robert Goodwin to Florence Walker, 1892, June qtr. Basford, in the areas of Nottingham/Derbyshire. England.

I can't see anything on familysearch, or on ancestry.

take care, m'dear

Hello Sylvia...nice to hear from you again..........hope you're keeping well.........

I have found the Civil registration of the Marriage..but not the Parish record.I suspect it might not have been a church wedding.

However....ROBERT GOODWIN born Kenton Suffollk 1871..son of Robert and lucy Goodwin..both of Kenton.........Robert senior was a Dyer, and clearly brought his family to Nottingham for work

FlORENCE WALKER was born in Lenton Nottingham 1874 daughter of James and Ruth Walker..both of Nottingham

Interestingly I actually live within five minutes drive of all the relevant places this family lived and worked, and indeed drove past one of the houses this morning.......
1871 and 1881..Robert snr and Lucy are living in Gamble's yard with their children..which in 1881 includes ROBERT junior Gambles Yard has gone

1891..same family at 9 Mandalay Street Basford......the house still exists

1901 Robert and Florence have three children and are living at 1 Eastwood street Basford..with three children..and his parents are living at number 23...

1911.Robert and florence have four children and are living literally round the corner from Eastwood Street on the main road...173 Cinderhill Road..they appear to have all worked at a very local Dyeworks..the buidlings of which still stand..as do the three last addresses....Eastwood St..Mandalay street and Cinderhill road...........they all "Google" quite easily with the little orange man....
They are actually all on the Ancestry Censuses...............
Hope this helps..I can even photograph the houses if your friend needs them.....

Derek.
