Wedding certificate has been written in the worst handwriting i have ever seen!

Emery is definately whats written on certificate so why that changes to embury is a mystery?

16TH SEPTEMBER 1872
Matilda Emery AGE 28 residence LAMB STREET father JOHN EMERY

William Bennett AGE 30 residence LAMB STREET father WILLIAM BENNETT

Witnesses look like ELIZA HILl and ALFRED WILLIAM BA?KE? looks like it could possibly be barker or basker

Not the breakthrough I was hoping for!!

Looking for possible neighbours etc..

These people just dont want me to find them.......

Adam Report 13 Feb 2010 08:27

Eliza Hill was a neighbour of Matildas,

William and Matilda are on 1861 & 1871 census as married yet marriage was in 1872?

Anyone any ideas on how to narrow down the search for William and William? have run out of ideas. have all certificates I could find reference for but still no clues????

William Snr is listed on both William Jnr's marriage certificates as a Hawker as is William Jnr.
William Jnr listed as living in Lamb Street when marrying Matilda. and lists his place of birth as essex on 3 census records and boston usa on another??

Any Ideas please, I dont mind searching for hours , just dont know where to go next

Thanks

Adam

Have started researching for the elusive William Bennett again Ref my last post this time last year!
Have come to an absolute dead end so any advise whatsoever would be a massive help.
Have traced the rest of the family back quite far but really started this research for the Bennett branch of the tree!

Hello Again & thanks for looking.

In 1861 they are both to be found at Chapmans Lodging House , Long Street, Wotton-Under-edge (somewhere I pass everyday!)

William Bennett 30 Lodger Licenced Hawker b. Boston USA brit subt.
Matilda Bennett 27 Housekeeper Licenced Hawkers Wife b.Bath

This Lodging House is around 3 miles from where they eventually settled in Cromhall.

Duh, I'd already posted it on page one!

1861:
Matilda Bennett abt 1834 Bath Housekeeper Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire - Wife of Licensed Hawker
William Bennett abt 1831 USA Brit Subt, Boston Lodger Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire - Licensed Hawker

Did you also notice this bloke lodging there? A bit of a coincidence, don't you think?
William Bennett abt 1826 Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire, England Lodger Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire - Ag lab

William is my G/G/Grandfather my G/Grandfather was Frederick.

Not sure about the extra William Bennett at the Lodging house?

There just seem to be no clues anywhere to find more details prior to 1861!

Not that any of the following helps, but...

for completeness, the 1891 entry is as expected for the family (pages 1-3 of district 11 Cromhall are missing from one website, but present on another); children Mabel (12) to Arthur (1) are with the parents; Lucy again states b Whitfield; William simply states Essex b approx 1834.

Wigby, given as the place of birth, is also a very rare surname, suggesting that the family name may have derived from the place; but whilst finding all entries for all census years suggests that there may have been an East Anglian place name Wigby, all East Anglian examples are living in Norfolk by 1841 (the sole Essex example is a mistranscription for Wisby).

at the lodging house in 1861, there is another individual, Mary McCarthy stated to be born in the USA; it may be possible that in recording all the places of birth, the enumerator became muddled? Or might Mary be William's (remarried) mother? Or did William and Mary agree over a drink that it would be fun to mislead the enumerator? Given that 1861 is the only entry suggesting the USA, I'd guess that he really did think he was born in Essex (so at least likely to have been living there at some point in his childhood)

looking on family search, there is a baptism in 1835 in Langenhoe parish; using google maps, this is close to Abberton reservoir, and down the road is Little Wigborough; but this family are found in Langenhoe from 1841 to 1861;

since he gives his place of birth as (in order from 1861 to 1901) USA; Essex; Wigby Essex; Essex; Roghtford Essex, then it might be worth enquiring from Rochford library whether there are any nearby placenames that might have been pronounced Wigby (particularly as verbal contractions from a longer placename) and then looking for baptisms in likely parishes?
