Find Ancestors

I am trying to find where Alfred Barnjum was in 1891. He should have been in the Kingston Surrey area. He was born on 2nd January 1848 in Chelsea. He died on the 15th January 1894 in the kingston union workhouse. Does anybody have any connection with the Surrey records office that could kindly help me find where alfred was prior to his death in 1894.

Can't find him on the l89l census - is the spelling Barnjum - can find no one with that surname

The name is definiately Barnjum although there has been some weird and wonderful spellings on past census's i.e barngam, barryinn and so forth. I think that whoever rewrites these censuses for online viewing are finding it difficult to read the originals.

Is this possibly wife Jane marrying right after his death?

There's no other Jane Barnjum in the GRO index - birth or death.

I wonder because it could mean they were in the Lambeth vicinity in 1891 and if he had to enter the workhouse before he died, because of illness or disability, he might have had to go to his home parish.

Or he could have been in the workhouse well before his death. I tried a search for "A B" as sometimes residents of institutions were recorded by initials only, but did not see one likely for him.

Can you tell us how to find him in the various censuses (you should really make corrections at Ancestry!) or just post wife Jane's details?
