Jane left Alfred mid to late 1880's and moved to chiswick where she met up with and married a William Banfield. She waited until alfred died in january 1894 and then married banfield in lambeth in june 1894. I believe that it was in 1889 she had a daughter amy with banfield in chiswick. This is my gt. gt. grandmother and we know that she definiately left alfred in kingston, Surrey when she 'run off' with william banfield.

Thomas and rebecca barnjum were alfred's grandparents, His mother was Martha (nee: Obee) who was married at the time to John Barnjum so heaven only knows how alfred got henry on his birth certificate as his father as Henry was john's brother

Okay then, I'd found William and Jane Banfield in 1901 and suspected that was her! So he should be in Kingston ...

Jane may have "left" him because he was in the workhouse, possibly because of an incapacitating condition, e.g. suffering from a disease or disorder of the mind, and she would likely have been in need of a male partner to help support her kids.

Wouldn't life be a lot easier if they all stayed on the "right side of the sheets"?

Thanks guys for all of the info you have given me. It will take me sometime to troll through all of this. Unfortunately I do still have the unanswered question of where alfred was prior to his death in the kingston union workhouse in 1894, I know that Jane definiately left him in the late 1800's as she had a child amy by william banfield in 1889 who she went onto marry in June 1894. In the 1891 census you will find Jane at 35 Windmill Road Chiswick with her family name changed to 'Barnes' for whatever reason. I also noticed that Ann of Green Gables stated that Jane's daughter Alice's father was frederick barnjum. Sorry Ann Alice's father was definiately Alfred Barnjum. Also Alfred who was born at 9, Keppel Street Chelsea in 1848 cannot be found on the 1851 census although his mother Martha was back on the Barnjum family farm in Perivale with no husband but her daughters. So where was alfred then? Bless him

Shirley, just a note - it wasn't Ann who said Alice's father was Frederick, it's the parish record of her baptism that said it.

I had wondered whether Alfred might have been known as "Fred", but hadn't had any more luck finding him in 1891 that way.

On the marriage certificate of alice who incidently is my gt. grandmother it states that her father is frederick barnes. I am just wondering whether Jane did not want alfred to ever find his family again. I know that Jane was a very victorian matriarch and wondered at the many stories my mother told me about her. Unfortunately my mother passed away in 2007 and was the last in the line apart from me. I would just like to say a big thankyou to everyone out there that has been tireless in trying to find dear old Alfred. I am beginning to love him more than Jane ever did!!!
