♥Deetortrainingnewfys♥ Report 19 Jan 2010 22:45

Can anyone tell me the date the 1871 census was taken.

I am trying to find the birth record of my gt grandmother which is proving difficult due to different years of birth being given across the census'. Ellen Lloyd is showing as age 7 months on the 1871 census. She is with her father Richard and mother Sarah in Stoke St Milborough, Shropshire with the rest of the family.

I cannot find her in 1881, or her parents. I have found her brother John Lloyd and step-brother Walter Jones in Diddlebury.

By 1891 she was married to my Gt grandfather and I have her from then on.

She had 2 illigitamate daughters in 1884 and 1886 when she would have been about 14 and 16 years old? They were born in Neenton and Aston Botterell, Shropshire.

Any help finding her in 1881 would be very useful.

These gt grandparents are giving me a headache, both of them give different ages and birth places on the 1891, 1901 and 1991 census'.

Ellen married William Palmer in Aston Botterell in Feb 1887. I have Ellen's death in Wolverhampton in 1943 which gives her age as 78 - making her born in 1865 and not 1870/71? Her husband gives his birthplace as Delbury on the 1891 census (which I am told is Diddlebury) which is where Ellen's brothers were in 1881, perhaps how they met. But he then gives his birthplace as Carfdale in 1901 and 1911 and his age 45 and 50 respectively.

I just cannot pinpoint the birth records and really don't know where to go from here

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, I would really like to go further back with my tree and the families of this couple.

Thanks in advance
Dee

No penalties until 1875 for not registering births....so may not have beenr egistered

Thank you freewheel, I hadn't realised that they didn't have to register births until 1875.

thank you for your advice.

I'd have thought this was the most likely to be correct as seems to be soon after her birth:

1871 England Census

Name: Ellen Lloyd
Age: 7 months
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Richard
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Where born: Stoke St Milborough, Shropshire, England
Civil parish: Stoke St Milborough
County/Island: Shropshire
Country: England
Registration district: Ludlow
Sub-registration district: Munslow

Richard Lloyd 32
Sarah Lloyd 34
Walter Jones 12
Mary Ann Jones 9
Matilda Lloyd 6
Ellen Lloyd 7 months
John Lloyd 3

If census was April and she was 7 months, I'd say there is a fair chance this is her birth:

Births Dec 1869 (>99%)
Lloyd Ellen Ludlow 6a 543

(In same reg. district as above census).

♥Deetortrainingnewfys♥ Report 19 Jan 2010 23:03

Yes, I saw that one, but 1869? she would have been a year old by the time of 1871 census

Why this couple lied about ages all the time, I do not know. They married in 1887 and she was 24 - making her born 1863?

He was 28 making him born in 1859. but on 1891 and 1901 he is 35 and 45 making him born in 1856

Sorry about the birth, point taken. I think maybe the Ellen/Hellen and Matilda above have ages reversed?

♥Deetortrainingnewfys♥ Report 19 Jan 2010 23:16

How did you find that! That is definately them as Matilda is 6 in 1871

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 19 Jan 2010 23:19

Why thank you! Just looked for Richard and hoped for the best. Needs a lot of imagination this one. I have a family who mixed up all the children's birthplaces so an age swop is quite possible, especially as someone else was recording the details.

Sarah I think, was married before as there are two children Walter Jones and Mary Ann Jones in 1871. I have no idea as to her maiden name

Do you think Ellen could have been registered as Helen at birth? I haven't looked for that

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 19 Jan 2010 23:27

It's possible the 1871 ages were mixed up maybe? They would have been registered Ludlow:

Births Sep 1870 (>99%)
Lloyd Matilda Ludlow 6a 554

Births Mar 1865
Lloyd Ellen Ludlow 6a 543

This would match later ages for Ellen perhaps.

I am with you now.
the 1871 should read Ellen age 6 and Matilda 7 months? Then Ellen would be born around 1865

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 19 Jan 2010 23:31

Well, it's a theory! It fits with given age at death. How about other censuses and marriage?

She is 46 in 1911 so that ties-in

She is 40 in 1901
