Could it be Stafford? and not Staffond?...If so it looks like he may have been Maryann son before her marriage to Joseph..

This looks like his birth reg...if you get the cert. it will confirm wether he was illigitimate or from an earlier marriage and any maiden name if so.

Sure looks as though he was Marys son before marriage with all the records pointing at it..

Edwin is down as Staffond on the 1881 and (though fairly difficult to read) I am fairly sure it is Staffond as a witness on Will & Mary Ann's marriage church record entry in 1896 - the ffon is the readable bit!

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 17 Mar 2010 22:26

did you prove that the Mary Joseph married was Mary Boothman as there is also this marriage which would fit

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1864
GREENWOOD Joseph
STAFFORD Mary
Bacup, St John

again perhaps misheard / miswritten from Staffond - place fits with bitrth of 1st greenwood child

hi Ann
no i didnt prove that joseph married mary boothman what do you think would be the best way to find out? i was thinking may if i order my grt grandads birth cert (william thomas greenwood 1865) would it have his mothers maiden name on it?

lancashireAnn Report 17 Mar 2010 22:48

it would have his mother's maiden name.

it is probably worth putting a checking point of father's name. There are 2 registrations but as the census says born Bacup it is probably the Haslinden one. Also the Burnley one would only have been 15 yrs old on the 1881 whereas the haslingen one was born before the census date and would have been 16 as stated.

FannyByGaslight Report 23 Jun 2010 23:38

You will not find births before sept 1837 on Freebmd as civil registration did not start until then.

You need to get her marriage cert to get her fathers name and occupation to be able to find her on earlier census.

There are too many to choose from.
And she changes her birth year on most census, but her favourite place of birth is Bakewell Drebyshire.
