hi fanny
thanks for the help, on the marriage cert joseph is down age 24 which would make his birth year c1840, yet all the other imformation i have on him indicates that he was born around 1837, and the 1851 census you found he is down as 1842, do you think i have gone wrong somewhere?
kind regards

sorry FBG but I don't think that 1851 is right.

Joseph in 1881 states he was born in Todmorden which would be more consistent with children born in Bacup & Stacksteads. Trouble is there are a lot of Greenwoods in the Todmorden area - Greenwood Greenwood is even a fairly common name. I have several Greenwoods from that area in my tree.
Most of them were spinners too or connected in some form with the mills

edit - just found a lovely Joseph Greenwood on the 1851 on Todmorden site - age 59 occupation "late publican (out of bounds)"

It was just a guess really Ann as it had father Isaac and I couldnt find another.

Shame Isaacs occupation cant be deciphered.

On 1871 he says born in Lancashire and he is dead by 1891 so no more census to cross ref his birth place with unfortunately.

And I dont know Yorkshire very well for places which does not help.

No I dont think you are wrong Melody ,but a lot of people were not really sure when they were born as birthdays were not a priority in the grinding poverty that lot of them lived in ,so whe asked their age at any time they took a wild guess.
Also a lot of them were illiterate of course.

Are the witnesses on the marriage any of the Greenwood family?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 13 Aug 2010 23:19

found this one as a possible 1851

Canteen Hannah Greenwood head widow 33 Yorks, Stansfield
John Greenwood son u 26 stone masons labourer Yorks, Stansfield
Joseph Greenwood son 14 cotton doffer Yorks, Stansfield
John Sutcliffe visitor u 33 labourer at corn mill Yorks, Stansfield

Todmorden was Yorks by 1851 but Lancs in 1841 (apart from the district of Langfield - not sure about Stansfield)
Canteen was the address - an area near to the hamlet of Portsmouth!

So...No occupation for either father,so I presume they are deceased at time of marriage(most likely)

Looks like it says Winder for Josephs occupation and Mary is a Knitter.

Joseph lived at King Street.

The other witness is John ??? But not a Greenwood ,might be Stafford at a stretch, but a long stretch I would think.

The registrar/vicar had a terrible hand for writing I must say.

I have to go do a few things now, back later..

lancashireAnn Report 14 Aug 2010 15:13

so far I agree with FBG

definitely Winder for Joseph (common cotton mill occupation)

John S..... but fairly sure not Stafford possibly Shaw

will keep looking - will get Mary's address eventually - I've got a map somewhere

Tong Bridge - it no longer exists but there is a Tong Lane, Bacup and a Tong End Whitworth.

thanks, can you find the family in 1841 i have tried on here but not found anything so far, i was going to try and order josephs birth cert to find his mother but when i looked on fbmd there was quite a few to pick from in the todmorden area for 1837 as i reckon that was the year of josephs birth, as i have him down as dying in 1888 age 51

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 14 Aug 2010 18:17

Have you tried on here for a baptism with father Isaac?

www.familysearch.org

There are 3,all in Yorkshire.

But none in 1837.

1842,1834 and 1831

Melody

Melody Report 14 Aug 2010 18:35

hi fanny
yes i have tried family search and found the same 3 as you but as they were not in todmorden i didnt think any of them were him

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 14 Aug 2010 20:37

Im sorry Melody,I cant find them in 1841 at all.

I have run out of ideas now.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 14 Aug 2010 23:44

the only suggestion I have left is to look for a will for Isaac - on the other hand Isaac may have been fictitious

I agree none of those on family search look right

as Joseph died relatively young it might also be worth looking for a will for him. He may have named a brother/sister
