Zealand (also Sealand; Danish: Sjælland; pronounced [ˈɕɛˌlænˀ]) is the largest island (7,031 km²) of Denmark (the 95th-largest island in the world). Zealand is connected to Funen by the Great Belt Bridge and to Sweden by the Oresund Bridge.

The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, is partly located on the eastern shore of Zealand and partly on Amager. Other cities on the island include Roskilde and Elsinore.

[edit] Mythological origins

Gefion carving Zealand from Sweden. In Norse mythology, the island was created by the goddess Gefjun after she tricked Gylfi, the king of Sweden, as told in the story of Gylfaginning. She removed a piece of land and transported it to Denmark, and it became the island of Zealand. The vacant area was filled with water and became Mälaren.[2] However, since modern maps show a similarity between Zealand and the Swedish lake Vänern, it is sometimes identified as the hole left by Gefjun.

If you are interested in looking for family or ancestors In Holland then check out this site www.genlias.nl the Dutch are good record keepers and 200 years are covered by the Civil Registry which is free to look at. payment only required if you want to order documents. Births have the names of both parents, marraiges show both sets of parents and any previous spouses and deaths in most cases have spouses names and sometimes parents names as well.

Hi there!
Dont know if this is any help but Zeeland is a common name over here in Holland. Zealand is the English spelling. Another version is Van Zeeland or Zeelandt. The spelling was standardised after 1800. The families mostly originate from Zeeland which is now known for its Delta Works.

There are 27 Zealands ( probably only about 4 or 5 families) in the 1911 census for Lincoln. They are in the Boston/Spilsby/Lincoln area.

Let me know if you want any look ups

Thanks Henry, Ann, Sally, Kiwibird and Tenerife Sun

Apologies for the delay in responding, but I was stranded in Egypt at the end of a 10 day holiday and haven't looked in here since before I went away. After 6 days of will we/won't we fly/camelride/bus/cycle back home it all ended happily and without excitement.

There is lots for me to look at here, with extra connections I hadn't realised - such as the potential Huguenot and Welsh links - and I'll get back into it from tonight.

Ben and Mary had 3 children John 1860, Joseph 1863 and ***Enos 1865 who is on the 1911 census

In 1861 John Zealand b 1790 a batchelor and Ben's uncle is living with them - presumably the brother of James.

In 1873 Benjamin Zealand married Ellen Page and in the same year they had a son Alfred Z Page, before the marriage I guess. Ellen is still a widow up to the 1901 at least. And I think Alfred changed his surname to Zealand and is in the 1911

Re Alfred Zealand married to Eliza for 15 years according to the census making the marriage in 1896. This is the only 1896 with Alfred Zealand in but the wife is called Matilda. POSSIBLY she was Matilda Eliza and known as Eliza. The 1901 should reveal the answer I'll have a look.

Just noticed that in 1871 Ben was a widow aged 44, his wife Mary died in 1866, and Ellen Page aged 24 was his house keeper looking after his children Joseph and Enos aged 8 and 6. They lived at Stickford Drove, near Spilsby Lincs. A big gap in their ages!

So I think that Ellen became pregnant, and then Ben married her after the baby, Alfred Zealand Page was born. At a later date Alfred Page became Alfred Zealand.

This was an error in transcribing, as this my Granfather and mother. I have Alfred and Matilda's marriage cerificate and there is no other name but, Matlida. It's the same on her death certificate, no mention of Eliza. You are correct about my mother, she was Margery Queenie Zealand and moved to Newark, Notts to work as a domestic and met and married John Stanley Dale, a postman.

Wendy. There are 2 people not on Alfred and Matilda's family. Albert b.1903 and d.1903, and Francis b.1911 and married James Herbert Bennett. Not sure wether the Amber Hill Zealands can be linked to the Stickford Zealands??
