Hi i wonder if anyone has a few minutes if they could help me. I have a Frederick Carter 1881 in Stenning, Surrey. He was married to a lady called Mary Ann. I dont have her surname. I have found on the 1901 Census some possibilities that would be a long shot and one that is likely to be him but i cant be sure so would like another opionion.

1901 Census.
8 Oak Grove Road,
Penge Kent
Surrey.

Name Relation Age Occupation Place of birth
Charles Carter Head 68 Bricklayer Boxford, Berks
Harriet Carter Wife 73 Winchester, Hants
Harriet E Carter Daugher 40 Dressmaker Walworth
Frederick G Carter G Son 19 Fitter Anerley, Surrey

If anyone could help that would be good.

Thanks
Louise

Louise, not quite sure what you're after here. How do you know he married a Mary Ann?

Louise,

The only way to verify anything is with the appropriate certificates.

If you know your Frederick Carter married a Mary Ann then you need to find one of their childrens' birth certs.

Hi
I found them on the 1911 Census with my great grandmother Gentina Carter. That is the line im going up.
What im after is whether or not this is the most likely person as im so far from Parish records and not in a position to buy certificates so dont want to make mistakes.
If that makes sense.
Thanks
Lou

Could this be their marriage:-

Name: Frederick Carter
Year of Registration: 1901
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Tonbridge
County: Kent, Sussex
Volume: 2a
Page: 1517

Also on the page is a Mary Ann Swan.

The marriage certificate would give his father's name and occupation.

This looks like the birth reg. for Gentina....if you purchase this it will confirm parents names including mothers maiden name...

OK the spelling was right!! I know it gets expensive but there are times when a cert becomes necessary and this might be one of them:

Births Dec 1902 (>99%)
Carter Gentina Hailsham 2b 90

In answer to your original question....... yes there is a chance that this may be the correct Frederick G Carter but....... by the same note it may not be, there could have been more than one Frederick G. Carter born Surrey c1881

Is Stenning near to Annerley?

Family history is a very expensive hobby, but you really need to buy certificates, especially on yout direct line to insure that you are tracing the correct people, either the marriage cert. for Frederick or Gentinas birth cert. will help you trace back correctly.

KathleenBell Report 4 Apr 2010 23:45

If I was you I would buy Gentina's birth certificate first to establish her mother's maiden name. If it turns out to be Swan then you can be pretty certain that we have given you the right marriage in Tonbridge. Then you have to decide whether or not to buy the marriage certificate as this is the only way to be certain of Frederick's father's name so you can be sure you have the right family in the 1901 census.

Looking at the 1901 and 1911 census entries again, i`m not sure you have the same person on both..

1901 Census he is Frederick G Carter...
1901 Marriage Frederick Carter
1911 Census Frederick Carter

Think the 1911 Frederick is probably the one who marries in Tonbridge in1901, as the 10 years of marriage and the names of possible brides match up.

An example of why you need to buy the certs.!!

Thanks so much for all of your replies. Think the best thing to do is wait until i have moved house and order some certificates. I have spent 3 years finding Gentina and her marriage etc as her name is spelt differently on all registrations incl 1911, birth, marriage and death. I am sure another few months wont make too much difference. lol. It was a long shot so thanks for all your help guys Nobody ever said family history was a quick proccess lol.
Thanks again
