Hi Shirley, I have only just come online as I have been out shopping today. I am surprised at how much you have found, I myself had five children for Alfred & Sarah and they were Sarah 1873 - Emily 1876-1884 - Mary Ann 1882 - Alice 1888 - Emily 1890 - 1891. I watched a program a few weeks ago called Who do you think you are, it is very popular here and I found out a reason a lot of children died at a very early age or in a group. Apparently it is Syphylus that the mother has or had and it starts off with miscarriages, then babies dying at birth. Sometimes it causes children to go blind. Gradually it gets out of the mother's system until she can have healthy children. I found this very sad as at the time they would not have known what the problem was. This was in the story of Kim Cantrall whose great grandfather was blind, married three times and of the children of the last wife six died in a group. The mother was not blind at birth but at three years of age and obviously she got over it to give birth to her other children and then it came back. Amazingly she lived to the ripe old age of 92 in Australia where they migrated.
Just a little bit of interest but a sad story as now we know why so many children died at a young age., it would have been horrific for the parents.
I am now perusing what you have given me.

another snippet that I can't see has been posted is that Sarah lists she had been married for 40 years and had 14!!! children of which only 3 still living so the child Alice on the 1901 census must have still been alive by 1911

going back to the birth record of the son William I think maybe there was a miscommunication when the registrar asked what was the child's name he got the reply William Francis and mistakenly took the Francis as a christian name so the child is booked as William Francis in the christian name column and then Francis as the surname, as it was their first child they may not have realised the implication of this on the cert ,if indeed they could read , i expect the actual cert will show as this BUT he was baptised and died as William only

Hi julia
Well finally got in and looked at the census I actually come from that area and indeed remember the Greenwich Workhouse entrance Doors behind which was the workhouse which was later converted into the Nurses homes as the Workhouse Infimary became the local hospital , our daughter was born there!! The Infirmary was in the same grounds as the Workhouse
Having looked at the census and going back to the start of the entries athough it starts with the Workhouse master & his wife it then lists staff and then a long list of nurses before it list inmates which makes me conclude that Alfred was in the Infirmary as an inmate rather than being in the Workhouse itself.

My other message did not get through.
What you have done for me is great. It tells me that Mary and Sarah Dean the two daughters of Alfred and Sarah are both married, where as before I did not have anything for them at all. The 1911 census is the best thing out with regards to finding family as they tell you how many children are born and are now living. Obviously Mary North is the niece of Sarah & William Francis. I really appreciate all you have given me and look forward to your comments on Alfred in the Institution.
Kind regards
Julia

oh no the Find my past 1911 has gone down for maintenance was going to take a look but it does seem a likely scenario for Alfred ,perhaps he and Sarah parted and he went with daughter Sarah Francis whilst Sarah senior was with the other daughter

Well done Shirley, I am glad there is somebody out there like you willing to have a go, I couldn't do it myself. I think this would definitely have to be the one. I found a marriage for William Henry Francis to Sarah Dean Sep 1892 Brentford. Son William born Dec 1892 sounds correct to me.
Now I am thinking something else, when I was looking for Alfred Dean born 1846 what I did come across was one that had the age down as born 1843 but he was in an institution in Greenwich London. It seems possible this is the one as on the 1901 census for the Francis family the parish was Greenwich. What do you think?
