HI i have just recived the marriage cert for my grandparents Olive Miller and John Mathew Metcalfe born 1907. John and Olive were married on the 3rd of March 1934 at Chester-le- street vol 10a page 911. Olive has no name or surname of father do i take it that my grandmother did not know who her father was. Thank you Sandy

Olive born Rawe
Mother Rawe
who married another Rawe ?

Is this correct ?

and how does she become Miller then ?

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 21 Oct 2012 13:32

Do you know if her siblings were older or younger than Olive ?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 21 Oct 2012 13:39

Sandy, as Mike says, the names are rather odd.

Do you know for certain that Edith actually married William Rawe, or did they live together and she took his name?

MarieCeleste

Sandra, this is the info you gave us ...

Olive Miller was Olive Rawe who was illegitamate.
Olive Millers mother was Edith Rawe who married William Rawe

But now you say you think Edith was Miller and Olive born Miller.

Where was she born

Could this be her? ( same area as she married)

Births Jun 1909

Miller Olive - Chester le S. 10a 685

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 21 Oct 2012 13:53

I think this 1909 birth is more likely given the 1911 census and age at marriage:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Olive Miller
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1909
Registration district: Chester le Street
Inferred County: Durham

(Mike - did you do a sneaky edit? ;-) )

The 1911 census that MC posted has head as W. William , so William may not have been his first name.

Still not seeing a marriage though

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 21 Oct 2012 14:03

Think he was just registered as William:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: William Rawe
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1889
Registration district: Auckland
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 185

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2006
Name: William Rawe
Birth Date: abt 1890
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1956
Age at Death: 66
Registration district: Durham Northern
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 1a
Page: 526

Looking at the original of the 1911 I'm thinking he may have been writing "Mr" in front of his name which has been transcribed as "W"

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 Oct 2012 14:05

I wonder if this William's surname could'nt be read properly????

It is the right year by the 1911 census as that says they have been married 2 years.
