I have received an email from Genes Reunited telling me the following.

"A message you posted on the Genes Reunited message boards has been reported to us and, as it is not in keeping with either our T&Cs or Terms of Use. It will not be reinstated"

The whole thread has been removed so I presume that I should not have posted a thread offering look up's for the 1911 census.
If anyone requested a look up and didnt get to see if I had replied, please contact me via private message and I shall find the info again.

Is GR now linked to FMP ?

Wonder when they would start removing threads

Knowyourforefathers

Knowyourforefathers Report 19 Aug 2010 08:55

I wonder if it is just the 1911 census or all of them?

I suppose the next thing will be the removal of members threads asking for any census or bmd look up.

Soon they wont be able to find anything on here without paying up front.

Did they mention which part of the T & C you broke?

Knowyourforefathers

Knowyourforefathers Report 19 Aug 2010 09:12

No just the following.

"A message you posted on the Genes Reunited message boards has been reported to us and, as it is not in keeping with either our T&Cs or Terms of Use. It will not be reinstated"

Now I understand that to be " a Message that I posted on my THREAD was reported.
So has someone reported a posting of mine on the thread. The only postings that I made were what I had found for members, and i think there were two saying sorry that I could not find the person they were looking for.

Or the whole thread has been reported.

I suspect nobody reported it - more likely they are monitoring the boards for threads like this. I have seen one this morning where a member requested a lookup and that thread has been deleted.

So if we do 1911 lookups might be wise to advise people to save the info straight away.

It's a pity someone did not report the mishmash that was on TTF early evening yesterday, some of which is still there again today.
I despair, I really do, but then, no-one will take notice of me

So if we are not allowed to help people why have they put that sticky on TTF??

Perhaps Genes Reunited staff may put wording such as can be found in the rootschat site:
http://www.rootschat.com/help/posting_guide.php

Do not publish copyrighted material on RootsChat.
Just because you "found it on the Internet", or you have "bought the book/CD/DVD/...", etc, does not mean that you can re-publish it elsewhere. Please examine closely any "Conditions", "Agreements" and/or "Terms of Use" before posting such material.
For further guidance, click on the [Copyright] link at the bottom of every RootsChat page.

Do not ask for look-ups from commercial sources.
Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'.

I think in a funny kind of roundabout way GR are trying to protect us *helpers* by no longer allowing threads dedicated to doing look ups.

They know that the managers/owners of other sites look at these boards and they also know that it is against those sites rules for people to do multiple look ups (unless the person has paid for professional usage of that site). There have been reports on here in the past about some people having their access to a site restricted and being investigated because they were doing so many look ups.

Individuals asking for a look up won't be affected I'm sure (hope?), so we can probably all carry on helping those asking for a look up on their own thread - for now anyway :-))

Kay????

Kay???? Report 19 Aug 2010 14:07

Everyone who C&P from Ancestry has always been subjected to this condition unless its for personal or professional use only ,c&p saw a hugh rise in Ancestry subs over the last 2 years.

Perhaps a way round it from here and FMP is not to c&p the transcript just details from the transcript a longer process but at least its only putting whats beens found.

Rootschat do not allow any c&p from subcription sites just written found details.

I'ts fair enough I suppose, but whats the difference when someone starts their own thread asking for a look up and half a dozen people reply??

So thats 6 or more people searching for the same thing when one person could have done it

Thanks for that Joy.
Mary you could be right.

I am now wondering if and when Genes Reunited ceases to exit as we know it, will its Staff members continue to be employed???

Contrary Mary

Contrary Mary Report 19 Aug 2010 14:22

Jax.........(I think) other site owners are probably less likely to look at each individual thread and take note of everyone who posts a look up in reply - but they will notice the name of someone offering a look up thread.

Then they may well find that their access to that particular site is restricted or even terminated as against their T&C's.
