Hi Robert
Just trying to confirm your enquiry. Regarding the Huddersfield riots and the Luddites, it culminated with the death of William Horsfall but this took place around April 1812. If your relative was born in 1857 then I would say he was in Wakefield for some other reason. I haven't the information at hand but I know someone called Mellor was hanged. If you google "William Horsfall"+ "Luddites" it will give you some background to riot and the ultimate downfall following his murder. I will look elsewhere to see if I can find any info on Thomas Jessop- JLe

BatMansDaughter Report 31 Aug 2010 13:29

Hi Bob,

If this is Tom Jessop who was a Carter by trade and lived in Dalton and married Harriet, from reading the archive newspaper reports it's seems that the marriage was quite turbulent.

I have read reports that he was constantly in front of the School Board for his children not attending school and a few reports of incidents at home regarding his wife...... maybe be link to a conviction??

Hi Robert
Just reading the info re Tom Jessop. Whilst it is available on line from the lancashire library, the news from the papers available is not just for the Lancashire area, unless you have had a pm to inform you differently, I would think that his family were together in Dalton Huddersfield. JLe

hi janet
i have his family his wife and children are living in lincs
with harriets flatters family acording to 1860s census i am trying to find my grandfather thomas who married harriet in 1906 on the census for 1911 it shows my father as 11months and harriet has been married 5 years
thank you all for showing interest in my research
regards bob

Janet

Janet Report 3 Sep 2010 10:47

Hi Robert
I think we seem to be at cross purposes. The Tom Jessop I am talking about was born 1857 and married Harriet Hodge in Sept 1876 in Huddersfield and lived in Dalton. On the 1891 census he is described as Cart/ Waggoner which is what I thought Dee was referring to.

When you mentioned about the family living in 'lancs' which has now been altered to 'lincs' this is why I explained about the lancs library. -JLe

Hi Robert
Can you confirm which Thomas Jessop you are trying to trace. Is Thomas Jessop born 1857 your great grandfather.?
Following on from' the family were in Lincs in the 1860's' with the family of Harriet Flatters. Can I confirm that Harriet Flatters born mar qtr 1879 in Sleaford, is the right person who married Thomas Jessop in Huddersfield in 1906?. I believe her father to be Abraham Flatters and he appears to be a widower on the 1861 census-J

Hi Robert
Perhaps before trying to sort out Thomas Jessop 1857 it would be better to concentrate on finding the correct Thomas Jessop who is your grandfather. Does the date I have supplied for Harriet Flatters born in Sleaford correspond with the information, i.e. her age in 1911. If there is any doubt it is always better to start by ordering the birth certificate of your father then you can be certain that you are following the correct Jessop. If there is an uncle with the surname Flatters that looks more than hopeful. Are you saying that both Thomas Jessops have wives called Hannah, which could be Hannah Flatters and Hannah Hodge.
I'm sure it can all be sorted. -JLe

Janet Report 4 Sep 2010 15:50

Hi Robert
I've found Harriet's family on the 1891 in Kirkburton which at least explains how she appeared in Huddersfield when she was born in Lincs. Do any of these names ring a bell?
Abraham 49 Farm Servant
Eliza 46
David 16
Lucy 14
Harriet 12
Henry 11
Emerson 7
Mira 5
Florence 3.
They are all living just a few miles from Dalton. -JLe

Janet

Janet Report 4 Sep 2010 16:54

By ordering the marriage certificate of Harriet and Thomas, hopefully it will have Thomas's age, if it says over 21, worry not as his father, together with his fathers occupation should be entered on the cert. Looking at all the Tom Jessops and Thomas Jessops of the surrounding area I would be looking at Thomas Jessop c. 1877 living at Lepton. He is the son of Henry and Alice, but that doesn't fit in with your Thomas Jessop 1857.
My theory is that 1881 there are 5 Tom/Thomas Jessops. By 1891 there are 3. By 1901 one Tom Jessop is married but he came from Bradley Mills which is near town centre and the only Thomas Jessop, not married, living 2 miles from Harriet Flatters is the one born around 1877 and is a coal miner hewer. Does that occupation fit in......it would if you were looking for some belligerent ancestor! -Happy searching-jLe

Hi Bob
First of all may I say thank you for sharing the information regarding your stroke, in order to explain what must be frustration for you sometimes. Well done you for your endeavour, but family history can be confusing for all of us sometimes and I have received a lot of help from others when I can't see the wood for the trees
.
Yes you can do virtually all research on line but perhaps it might be better to deal with one thing at a time.

You have asked about Jack,Charles Henry,Gladys Lucy and Fred.
The best I can come up with is the same as you for Jack- zilch
What about these?
Charles Henry Jessop born Dec qtr 1907
Gladys Jessop probably Mar qtr 1910
Lucy Jessop June qtr 1914
Fred Jessop born Sept qtr 1917 and possibly death Jun qtr 1918.All born Huddersfield
do these fit in?- JLe
