Darealjolo Report 26 Aug 2010 10:03

I am trying to find information on my Nan's dad.
On my nans birth cert it says
Gertrude Patricia herbert born 1920
Father is John Herbert a salesman
Mother is Gladys Eileen Herbert, mmn Smith

I got their marriage cert to get more info

John Herbert age 32 a Soldier in Norwich
Father is John James Houghton a house furnisher

Gladys Ellen Smith age 21
Father George Smith Deceased

I am having trouble because of Johns dad's surname is Houghton.

I also cant find a death, so i dont know if John died while serving in the war.

Can anyone help please :)

Somerset,

Says a house furnisher on cert. But the name isnt what you have here on the census, i dont know why his surname is Houghton and John's is Herbert!!

Darealjolo

Darealjolo Report 26 Aug 2010 10:42

On Johns marriage cert to Gladys Ellen Smith, the witnesses are John James Houghton and Gertrude Houghton, maybe they are husband and wife!!

Somersetgirl,

Yes that defo looks like Gladys and her family. So from 1911 to 1915 Gladys dad George passed away.
I will look for his death later, i have to go out now, so i will be back later.
Thankyou for finding this information for me.

wonder if John was born to a single mum Herbert who married John James Houghton?

Found John Herberts army record, it gives his next of kin as John James Herbert and has his marriage to Gladys Smith on there so it's definitely the right one.

Address is gives as 112 Myddleton Road, Bowes Park which is on the border of Wood Green. Occupation is printers porter.

There is another army record on there which is 34 pages long.

Will see if I can see anything else on there.

Jansmith,

I wondered that also but i tried looking for a birth and that proved abit hard for me.

Lulabelle, i saw that myself aswell about the fathers name, yet on marriage cert it gas John James Houghton, maybe it was an error!!
There are 34 pages!!!

Sorry for not coming back sooner but felt unwell last night.

Yes Jan 34 pages, haven't seen that many on one person before. Like you said about the father's name maybe an error or single mum or could be they have a double barrel name? The only thing I found that was helpful was that he was born Hackney in 1883.

I think the census details Somersetgirl posted on here for the family with a Leonard in fit. That family are living at Myddleton street on the 1901 census.

Also think Leonards birth details need looking at as I wonder if John and him are the same person. Think I found Leonards Christening details and it gives his birth date as 13th september 1884 but I think that is a mistake as his birth year is 1883 as below.

Births Dec 1883 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOUGHTON Leonard John Hackney 1b 517

And there's a death in 1954 in Ware for a Leonard John Herbert aged 71.

Somersetgirl, i have emailed you the certificate.

Lulabelle,

Sorry you was ill, hope your feeling better now.
Wow 34 pages all for one soldier, that is alot isnt it.
I have tried looking on this more but not getting far. I have tried looking for John's birth, cant find it.
The death you found is in the right area for where my nan was born.

I have printed of 36 pages from war records for John Herbert.
From what i have seen, it looks like he was born in Hackney in 1883, his father was John James Herbert of 112 myddelton road and the marriage to Gladys Ellen Smith is there also, so i know i have the right man. Still dont understand the Houghton part.
