Ah, so just not to confuse Alan, he should order it this way then? --

marriage
Name: Edward Hardman
Year of Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Leigh
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 385

along with

marriage
Name: Margaret Hardman
Year of Registration: 1904
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Leigh
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 428

birth
Name: Mary Elizabeth Hardman
Year of Registration: 1892
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Leigh
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 288

Especially the first marriage certificate, to get Margaret's age and father's name.

I got passed in the post while editing so I'll put it here instead.

I get it -- jax -- when Alan said "you've got te right people in your tree", he meant "one has the right people in one's tree". ;)

jax

jax Report 14 Sep 2010 20:04

when I looked up the marriage Janey Margaret was missing but I found her as you can see

You will get the hang of it Alan, but please do not take as gospel what anyone else has on their tree unless you can be sure it is correct

Ah, jax -- I was trying to figure out that 1901 --

Edward Murphy 24 >> Margaret's brother
Margaret Hardman 34
Mary Elizth Hardman 8
Thos Daniel Hardman 12

Right, so she was definitely unmarried when she married Edward Hardman, but Thomas could have been registered/baptised as Hardman if he was Thomas's father.

I would get the birth certificate for sister Mary Elizabeth Hardman as well as those marriage certificates.

Births Dec 1892
Hardman Mary Elizabeth Leigh 8c 288

Looks like probably her. Again, to see what it says for mother Margaret's names.

To sort it out, you have got to get certificates. We all do. ;)

I know mind-boggling! It took me months to do it, but I finally figured out that my own mother's surname is totally fake, because her grandfather switched his sometime around 1878.

It's these little twists and turns that make it interesting.

Alan -- did you read my post at the bottom of page 2 explaining who "we" are here?

jax

jax Report 14 Sep 2010 19:57

Alan these people are not in my tree I looked it all up on sites such as ancestry find my past and freebmd

If someone else has different details could you ask where they got them from?

As margaret was living with her brother in 1901 Murphy would be her maiden name.
Although the census says Thomas is stepson should say nephew

jax

jax

jax Report 14 Sep 2010 19:52

So I think you may find that Thomas was born in Ireland with either the surname Murphy or Hardman

The marriage of the parents in the 1911 census:

Marriages Dec 1904
Burke Peter Leigh 8c 428
Hardman Margaret Leigh 8c 428

It would be a very good idea to get both of Margaret's marriage certificates. At least one of them should tell you what her status was when she married (single or widowed) and what her very first name, her birth surname, was.

It seems that Thomas was likely born Hardman, but we don't know whether Margaret was married when he was born.

Alan, you may be under a bit of a misconception here -- when you say "your site" to jax.

jax and all the rest of us here are just paying members like tha'self, and we hang around the boards here to help other members with their puzzles. Some of us are very good at it -- way better than you'd get if you paid a "genealogist" -- jax included!

She seems to have hit the nail on the head, I think.

jax Report 14 Sep 2010 19:45

well if he was living at 60 Trafalgar st in 1901 and 1911 and you have a certificate with the same address it must be him.

The two Hardmans are margarets children with Edward
The two Hursts are neice and nephew

Had to dig about a bit but I think this is his parents marriage they married after he was born so he may have been registered in his mothers name
