Hi Helen ,
I am really interested in seeing what you have discovered dont mind you posting it . I want to thank everyone for all their help especially yourself and Catherine. Catherine it was a stroke of genius how you found my GG John on the census I would never have thought of going down that avenue.
I will post my findings re Ann after I have ben to the Mitchell on Tue night.
Just out of interest as I said I am really new to this but I managed to find my other GG who had disappeared also (what is it with my family) found he was put into Quarriers and sent to Canada got loads of info from Quarriers re him.
So if I can do it anyone can (alright up to a point till you get stuck like I did)
The GG you have helped me find was married 2 had 9 children and was a treasurer for the union of bakers and confetioners when he died a lot of the union ppl and the then Lord Provost of Glasgow were at his funeral.
As you will understand it is really great to fill in the missing bits re his life.
I would just love to find out if the Fergusons were his paternal family.
will stay logged on I really love how everyone on this board has been so helpful I know how much time it takes to find everything.

Looks like Bakers have been running through the Brodie genes.

This is as far back as I've found for your Brodie ancestors. James Brodie and his wife Janet Purves in the 1841 census.

Piece: SCT1841/713 Place: North Berwick -East Lothian Enumeration District: 1

1851 census:

Father: James Brodie
Mother: Janet Purves

Their children: (some of which can be seen on the census above)

All born East Lothian
Robert: 1812
James: 1814
Agnes: 1816
Janet: 1818
Frances: 1820
Peter: 1823
Thomas and Hugh: 1826 (Twins)
George: 1828
Agnes: 1820
David: 1833

You can see from the 1851 census, Janet Brodie (Purves) says she was born in Innerwick, East Lothian. This might be a possible christening for her.

Janet Purves
18th June 1791
Innerwick, East Lothian

Father: Robert Purves
Mother: Agnes Underwood

I can't find a marriage for Robert and Agnes... but this might be Agnes' death:

Scotlandspeople: Old Parish Registers: Deaths and Burials
Only 1 match coming up for these names.

Agnes Purves / Underwood (cross-ref names)
1820
County: East Lothian
Parish: North Berwick

Added all the info under one post as it might be easier to keep track of.

Linda, Ann was almost certainly in the poor house because she was ill. At that time most ordinary people couldn't afford the services of the medical profession so if they had a long term illness they often ended up in the poorhouse. As has already been said, poor relief applications can often give quite a bit of detail and you may be able, from the application to verify that her children were indeed visiting in Edinburgh. It may even tell you if it was relatives that they were with.

Hi rootgatherer,
According to Anns DC the poorhouse was in Glasgow it would have been nice to think her children were visiting her when they were in Edinburgh and would have told us why they were there.
As I said I am going to look at the poorhouse application in the Mitchell on Tue night (I am starting a 6 week course on Family History)
I will post my findings. Thanks for all your help and advice.
