Hi all,
I want to obtain the birth certificate of Jane Farrell, one of my aunts. Do I need to send for the certificate, or is there another way to check? There are 2 possibles on BMD, June 1905 8d 216 or March 1909 8d 231, both Manchester, but I'm not sure which one is correct. I think 1909 will be correct as her mother was born in 1891.
Jane's mother was Mary Ellen Farrell, father Daniel Long, but I think they were unmarried at the time of her birth.
Many thanks.

Do you have a death for her,as sometimes when death is registered the date of birth is given.

Hi Jacky,

I don't think the GRO will do reference checking points any more since the increase in costs in April.

Georgina,

If her mother was born 1891 then I would probably go for the 1909 birth. Although it's possible that her mother gave birth at 14 years old it is more likely to be when she was 18.

Unfortunately these checks are no longer carried out. They stopped offering the checking service when they increased the certificate fee to £9.25 when ordering online.

Edit: Kathleen beat me to it.

I know that she died in the early 1980's in Salford, Manchester. She was Jane Roberts then.

I can't find a Jane with mum Mary Ellen Farrell/Long on 1911 census.

Just family tales really, maybe they were married? However, I have searched for a Farrell/Long marriage and can't find one.
If you are really up for a challenge, there is a tale passed down the generations that Mary Ellen Farrell was married to a Mr McLean/MacLean before Daniel Long, but I can't find anything.
If that's true, why did she use her birth name of Farrell when she registered Jane?
Is this getting complicated?

Yes Jax, that's her, obviously she died alittle later that I thought. How does that tie in with the birth date?
If she was 88 when she died, she wouldn't have been born in either 1905/1909.

jax

jax Report 31 Oct 2010 14:45

That may not be her death it was the only one that fitted in Salford but then she may not have died there have you got the marriage cert with her fathers name on it?

jax

Georgina

Georgina Report 31 Oct 2010 14:45

Her husband was called Harold Roberts, but why does it say Farrell after his name?

jax

jax Report 31 Oct 2010 14:49

Nearest birth Jane farrell A/M/J 1906 West Derby Lancs I think this covers Liverpool etc and maybe just a tad too late for 7th Jan.There isn't another for a Jane Long either.

There was Jane Roberts died Oct 1984 in Salford 39 964 her birthday was 25/6/1914 but I couldnt find a match for a Jane farrell.

I can't find a marriage for Long/ Farrell either
Death of Mary Ellen Long 1972 Salford date of birth 6/2/1891

If the death already given is the correct one, the informant may not have been certain about Jane's age. I have several death certificates where the age is wrong. It all depends on how well the informant knew the deceased.

If that is her marriage it may be worth getting that as it will say how old she is and her fathers name

Mary, I think your Jane Roberts is correct dob 25/6/1914, but can't find a birth cert for her on BMD.
Mary Ellen's death details are also correct, I remember that, I wasn't close to Jane so don't remember her death very well, but I did think, as I previously said, I thought it was in the 1980's

Mary

Mary Report 31 Oct 2010 15:04

1911 Daniel Long 1890/1 at home and unmarried.
331 Parr Fold Walkden.

As I can't find a birth to match that of Jane Roberts who died 1984 it is possible it isn't correct one.
Do you know when Janes husband died and his birth year?
