Okay, Michael, your PM a while back was quite nice, and I'm going to be hugely wonderful here.

I have Canterbury ancestors -- the family that includes Viscount Sankey, my grx4 grmother's brother's grandson. A cousin from that family found me via Ancestry 4 or 5 years ago-- we share that grx4 grm, different husbands. She now lives (just coincidentally) in Canterbury, and has given me all kinds of info about my Canterbury families from parish records.

I don't think I want to ask her to make a special trip to do searches for you -- but I'm pretty sure she has some CD Roms or such of parish records.

... Okay, I went hunting in my emails, and this is what she has:

the BMD Index for the Canterbury city parishes
For your info the parishes covered by my CD are St Andrews, St Alphage, St Mary Bredin, St Mary Bredman, Christchurch, St Dunstan, St George, Holy Cross, St Mary Magdalene, St Mildred, St Martin, St Peter, St Paul and All Saints. The index has been prepared by the Kent Family History Society and is very useful because, as you can imagine, unless you know which parish something happened in you have to plough through 16 sets of parish records.

Now, this was over 4 years ago, so she might have different stuff now.

Put a list here of what you are looking for, and I'll email her and ask her to have a look.

Hi there,
As promised this is the only thread that i will be using from now on.
I am trying to find details of a Margaret Lacey who married an ancestor William Grout in Essex in 1732 but who died in 1734.
Can anyone help me.
Regards.
Michael.

Hi Janey,
Have just noticed your last message, which is appreciated.
The marriage would be about 1730/1734 and involved a Martin Grout and an Elizabeth.
Unfortunately i do not have any parish details as it just mentions Canterbury diocise.
Await your reply in due course.
Regards.
Michael.

I'm hugely snowed under with work at the moment, but sometime this week I will email my cuz in Kent and ask her to check in the parish records she has; I'm pretty sure she'll be very happy to do it -- but she may be on a winter holiday as she tends to be at this time of year, so I'll let you know when I hear back. It sounds like what she haves covers the area the marriage would be in -- if it was in Canterbury -- and the index is searchable so it would be a pretty quick and easy search.

edit - "what she haves"? I hope I'm not typing things like that in this pile of work! ;)

If people here do not have the resources themselves,

for Essex ancestors - have you tried http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,13.0.html
or
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,511.0.html

and for Kent - have you tried

?

Hi there again,
Does anyone live near the Chelmsford FRO and could look up some information regarding a marriage[circa 1727/1735].
Await a hopeful reply.
Regards.
Michael.

Good question, Joy ...

I've had a reply from my cousin, as follows:

The bad news I’m afraid is that my Canterbury CD only shows marriages from c1752 so no luck with Martin Grout. The only Grout mentioned in the marriage index I have (1752 to late 1800s) is a Sarah Grout who married a William Cannaby at St Mary, Northgate on 21 Apr 1835. This might possibly give him a parish to search.

As you know there are about 13 separate parishes in Canterbury alone. As I recall the Cathedral Archives do have a microfiche index of earlier bmds so he might be able to get them to look it up for him. However, there are no Grouts in my baptism or burial index.

HOWEVER, having just re-read your email I realise that he mentions the Canterbury diocese and not specifically Canterbury. Does he realise that the diocese covers the whole of East and Mid Kent.

This will give him a map of the Deaneries
http://www.canterburydiocese.org/parishdeanery/index.htm
but each of these can have 20 to 30 parishes.

This will give him a map of the Kent parishes covered by the Kent Family History Society
http://www.kfhs.org.uk/kfhs-area1.htm
although some of the more Westerly parishes come under the Rochester diocese.

I think he needs some more definite info before he can search.

Well, I guess we'll see whether the rule against duplicate posting, with which Michael is very familiar, applies to that board.

Any chance you saw the information I provided from my request to my cousin in Kent, Michael?
