My 2 x great grandmother's early life and parents are a mystery to me. She was Eveline Cundall born abt. 1852 in Parston Yorkshire. On the 1871 Census she appears to be living with her half-brother and family as a servant on their farm in Thornton Yorkshire. Shortly after in 1871 she married my 2 x great grandfather Charles Henry Johnson as 'Emmeline' Cundall and appears with him and their family on the 1881 Census as 'Caroline'. She died in 1884. I can find no record of her birth nor find her on the 1861 Census despite using variations on her name. I might add that I have my great grandfather's birth certificate which is where I learnt Eveline's name and on her and Charles' marriage certificate there is no father entered for Eveline.

The fact that she had a half brother suggests her mother re-married so Eveline was probably born under her mother's previous name.

Does she give place of birth as Pontefract in 1881 ?

I read Robert as her father/stepfather, but it seems HE was her half brother.

No father on the marriage certificate - how annoying:-)) Yes Robert appears to be her half brother.

Glitter Baby - Eveline as Caroline gives her birth place as Pontefract in 1881. Forgive my lack of knowledge as to where some of these places are in Yorkshire - I'm in Australia.

William appears to be married to Isabella in all censuses from 1841 to 1871, so how is Eveline a half-sister?

So - William and Isabella may be Eveline's parents but not necessarily Robert's? Is it possible that Eveline may have been mistranscribed in the 1861 Census as Emily?

on the 1871 Eveline was born 'Parston' - think this could be Purston (Jaglin) in the parish of Featherstone, which is in Pontefract district

If that's the marriage Mike - then Isabella would presumably be Robert's mother so where does Eveline fit in and why are they half-siblings.

Thank you Choccy - I couldn't find 'Parston'. Is 'Acaster' in that area? I take it that Thornton is in the Bradford area.

Note Robert was christened same day as brother Crossley ( Isabella's maiden name).
They could have been twins OR simply had a joint christening in which case one (maybe Robert) must have been born before William and Isabella married in 1829
