Find Ancestors

I have a John Leary born 1864 in Witney Oxfordshire his birth certificate shows his mother as Mary Rose and his Father as Frederick Leary, but they did not register the Birth somebody else did, WHY I wonder. Can not find out anything more about John or his parents until John turns up in the 1901 census living in Chobham Surrey, driving me mad, please help someone.

Is Rose her surname, or her second name? Does it state her maiden name & who actually registered the birth?

Yes to both, my tree on ancestry and the correct one in census.

Sorry just re read your reply no not Witby it is Witney, one census say one and the other says different, but it is definitley Witney Oxfordshire.

That original census form for 1901 states Yorkshire, Whitby. You could take the Whitby for Witney, but not mistake the Yorkshire.
