which country are you talking about?

Military records are held at Kew (National Archives ) Ancestry has WW1 and USA Draft documents

But be aware that many UK documents were burnt during the blitz in WW2 and only about 60% remain

Perhaps it was the Douglas Leuty born 1872 that changed his name from Robinson - the original marriage certificate to Annie Cann gives his occupation as soldier. Father's name is given as William Leuty, deceased - occupation chemist.

1901 census gives birthplace for Douglas Leuty senior as Lambeth but I can't see any births for a Douglas Leuty at all. It also gives Douglas Leutys occupation as Sergeant in the Army Pay Corps.

There are, however, these two Douglas Robinson births in 1872

Births Jun 1872
ROBINSON Douglas St. Saviour 1d 145

Births Sep 1872
Robinson Douglas Charles Edmonton 3a 192

Not sure which would be closest to Lambeth though.

Valid point CB, about the father being the person in question, but unless Margaret decides to return, we're speculating

That said, it does all seem to tie in quite nicely............

It would appear that the name change came about when he married.....

As this man was a soldier long before WW1, you will need to access the national Archives site for any possible records for him

The child's birth may not have been registered..........pre-1875,and especially in view of the circumstances of his birth

Hi Flick - the 1881 census was the one I was drawn to....

In 1891 Elizabeth and Annie are still living together but there is no Douglas with them. I can't see either a Douglas Leuty or Robinson that fits the bill in 1891 so perhaps he had already enlisted and had changed his name????

CherryBlossom

CherryBlossom Report 6 Jan 2011 14:26

Hi Margaret

It might be worth having a look at the national archives records to see if you can find anything for Douglas Leuty as Flick suggested.

I quite enjoyed working out the puzzle, so no worries Margaret....
