I wonder if anyone can help me in tracing where my grandfather (above) was born.
There is a John Campbell mentioned on the 1901 census born 1888 in Birmingham and on the 1911 census a John Cambell residing as a lodger also born in Birmingham
I have looked at the birth indexes for both years of 1888 and 1889 (which i am lead to believe he was born in either year) but nothing has turned up
I am lead to think he was probably born elsewhere.
The only info about him is that his father was Hugh,, and he had a brother called Lawrence.

Jax. My grandfather was married on April 4th 1915 at St.Annes Church, Aston, B.ham, to Minnie Grace. He was a case hardener, & lived in Gt. Ffrancis street, b.ham.
Witnesses were (looks like), Ellen Louisa Rhydes, William George Malbut

Dea. I was always lead to believe he was born in B.ham, & also told they were orginally from scotland.

I did wonder whether Hugh/Hugh and John were the same person but then I found the John Campbell in the childrens home in 1901 born in Birmingham.

As Hugh snr has listed himself as single in 1901 I wonder whether Ellen has either died or perhaps they have split up and therefore John has been put into a childrens home.

That doesn't explain why we can't find the birth registration though.

Cherry Blossom. I wonder if looking on church registers would help.

CherryBlossom Report 10 Jan 2011 16:40

The IGI used to have some Warwickshire records but I've had a look and can't seem to find them.

What would be interesting would be to see if you could find records of the Children's Home from the 1901 census and see if the parents of that John Campbell are mentioned.

Dea

Dea Report 10 Jan 2011 16:43

Thanks Diane but unfortunately, the address on marriage cert does not throw up anything useful on 1911..

Sorry,

I contacted the home, but they have no records. I think i will go through all the john campbells on the 1901/1911 censuses, but i think maybe that Hugh was his orginal name, but changed it for reasons unknown.
Thank you for your help

Have you tracked the rest of the family? I can't seem to find Lawrence after the 1891 census.

I can't find a birth registration for Lawrence Campbell but there is a registration for Male Campbell in Birmingham registration district in 1884 so perhaps that's him. But then I can't see him in either 1901 or 1911.

How did you make the link between Lawrence and John?

I do know how frustrating this must be for you. I had similar problems with a 2x gt grandmother Charlotte who I finally tracked down after a couple of years. Turns out she had been registered as Maria but married under the name Charlotte and didn't appear on any census under either Maria or Charlotte with her parents. In 1881 she was Eliza (I have no idea why!!) with parents, 1891 in an orphanage (both parents dead by then) as Maria and I still can't find her in 1901.

Do you know if any of the boys were in the military? That's how I made the link with my family - through the military records of one of the witnesses at the marriage who had the same name as the father named on the marriage certificate. He turned out to be her brother.

I have to go off and get some cleaning done and cook supper.

Good luck.
