We have no idea if she was born 1700s or 1900s, so More information please.

Richard Steel's Army records are on FMP, have you seen these?

They record that Mary died 11/07/1895.

You need to buy their marriage cert, this will give her age and father's name.
They seem to have been overseas for most censuses so info about her will not be available from them.

I have sent Richard's Army Records to Josephine. They include information that Mary died in July 1895. At that time the family was in India and on FMP overseas deaths iI found a Mary Steel who died in 1895 in Secunderabad, India aged 37.
Does anyone know if British records from India are available on line?

I have received the marriage cirt fo Mary Anne Legge & Richard Steele.
Mary's father is Henry Legge i have looked on Genes but cant find anythink for him or Samuel Steele Richard's father.

I think this might well be Richard with his father Samuel in 1861 ....... but the information from the certiifcate would help.

hi SylvialnCanada,

You have found a lot for me i have looked on genes & family search but no joy. The age of Mary on cirt was 21. Henry's occupation was Game Keeper. Richard's father Samuel Steel was a Farmer. Mary & Richard got married in Leeds Register Office May 1879. The surname Steele dosn't seem to have an e on the end of it.

I looked for Sam* Steel*, b. 1817 +/- 5 years, Staffordshire


I use ancestry.co.uk


The * is a wild card, and is useful to catch mispellings, or when it is Steel not Steele
