Just for the record, because spelling does count:

Marriages Dec 1919
Bevans James R Newsom W. Ham 4a 463
Newsom Ada C Bevans W.Ham 4a 463

(Not Nusome)

You can find their children's births at FreeBMD

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

if you search for

surname: Bevans
mother's surname: Newsom

... oops, only Ada R is transcribed so far. ... No, that's not the problem -- the problem is that you aren't the only one with a spelling problem!

There are Bevans births in West Ham 1920 to 1938 (and possibly two in Barnet 1940 and 1943) -- but the mother's name is spelled, variously,

Newsome
Newson
Newsum

so search at FreeBMD using

News*

as the mother's surname and you will find the 8 births in West Ham -- I won't copy them here because some of the children may be living -- in case you want the full details of your dad's siblings (some of whom may have died in childhood, of course).

Where is Barkfield? I am struggling to find your George Bevans prior to 1901 census. Do you have any other relevant information - like where he was born? Although it states in the 1901 Cannington I can't see anything prior to this.

Catherine

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Jan 2011 02:56

To trace George's siblings forward, it would be best to start at FreeBMD to get their full names from their birth records.

Then you can search there for marriages that match them ... and search for children's births to go with the marriages ...

And remember, spelling does count, for instance:

Births Dec 1900
Bevans Jesse W. Ham 4a 181

Marriages Dec 1924
Bevans Jesse Woolf W.Ham 4a 375
Woolf Mary A Bevans W.Ham 4a 375

Because I searched for any record, any time, for the name Jesse Bevans, it also found the birth and death of his son Jesse, 1930/32. But searching for Bevans births with mother Woolf gets you several others as well (again, possibly living, so I won't post them here).

Then when you've got some names and birthdates gathered, you can try the Search Trees button up to to see whether anyone has those people in their tree here at GR.

But what you're looking for is ancestors, actually ... so you need James Robert Bevans's parents' marriagecertificate, to get their ages and their fathers' names, or starters.

"george bevans born 1861 barkfield, married elizabeth wilson born 1863,they married in 1881/2"

That's a guess?

No such marriage, unfortunately. Do you have her name from James's birth certificate?

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Jan 2011 03:07

I just assumed that to be Canning Town.

Interesting coincidence in 1891, in Chingford, Essex:

George E S Bevans 33 - born London, Surrey
Phillippa M Bevans 34
Ernest L Bevans 5
Elizabeth Newson 26 - servant

but the 1891 George is an Underwriter, while the 1901 one, who seems to be correct, is a Lighterman (Barge).

Aha, here is Catherine's 1861 George:

Births Dec 1857
Bevans George Ernest Camberwell 1d 455

But no, that's the other George -- in 1881 he is an insurance clerk in Camberwell:

George E. L. Bevans 48
Frances Bevans 50
George E. L. Bevans 23
Edward S.T. Bevans 27
Marianne E. Bevans 25
Alfred H. Bevans 21
William H. Bevans 18
Eleanor Bevans 15
Ethel M. Bevans 12
Herbert J.N. Marshall 19

Sending Robert the Bevans-News* births from FreeBMD and Ancestry and the Bevans-Woolf births ... and suggesting he take out a 14-day free trial sub at Ancestry to do more searching for all these people!

But first, exhaust what you might be able to find at FreeBMD.

This is the marriage for the 1861 household:

Marriages Sep 1852
BEVANS George Edward Pancras 1b 23
Jones Frances Pancras 1b 23

but I'm thinking the 3-yr-old George in that household is still the wrong one, the one I tracked in later years.

So many things about this family just don't add up!

Can you please explain where the name Elizabeth *Wilson* comes from?

"parents and siblings of george bevans born 1861 barkfield, married elizabeth wilson born 1863,they married in 1881/2"

There's no such marriage, and I can't find such a couple in 1891.

I can't find the birth of a Mary A Bev* to fit 1889-1891 (she is 11 in 1901).

I'm suspecting that she, at least, was a child of Elizabeth's before she married / partnered with George.

There's this birth ...

Births Mar 1889
Wilson Mary Ann W. Ham 4a 32

There's no marriage of a George Bev* to an Elizabeth Wilson (barring transcription errors) 1875-1911.

We have to figure out who George Bevans was before we can identify and try to trace his siblings. ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Jan 2011 20:04

Ah, the spellings. ;)

Births Jun 1898
Bevins James Robert W. Ham 4a 150

The household in 1911 in West Ham

BEVANS GEORGE 1861
BEVANS LIZZIE 1863
BEVANS JESSIE 1900
BEVANS JIMMY 1898
BEVANS EDWARD

from OP: "records say 12 chilren born, 9 still living"
and you give this list:

john 1882
george1882
bill1884
flossie?1888
maryann1890
robert 1894
jimmy 1898
jessie 1900
edward 1904

Robert, what is George's occupation in 1911?

And can you say where that list of children came from?

(and don't forget: where does the name Wilson for Elizabeth come from?)

The 1901 census has

George Bevens 41
Elizabeth Bevens 39
Mary A Bevens 11
Robert Bevens 6
James Bevens 3
Jesse Bevens 6 Months

and I can't find them in 1891 ...
