Anita Report 25 Jan 2011 20:27

I have spent hours trying to find my paternal grandmother Elizabeth Brett nee Francis.
My grandfather Maurice John Brett has been easier in some ways although he seems to have dropped out of site between the 1881 census and the 1911 census.
These I the details I have with the different spellings of their names.

Morris John Brett born Hundon Suffolk 1866 to George 1825-1875, and Hannah Brett nee Bradman 1821-1882.
Cock Inn Hundon.(Birth certificate and 1871 census)

1881 Maurice John and Hannah(mother) living in Rollo Street Battersea.
I realised recently that the family they are living with are Maurice's sister Mary 1856 and her Husband
Barnard Watts 1849-1886 and their children.

Hannah dies in Battersea 1882 and Maurice disapears.

I found him again on the 1911 census, New Haw Addlington Chertsey. Living with one Herbert Groom and his wife, Louisa Groom nee Brett.
Also from Suffolk, Maurice has a sister by the same name but I have not been able to check this.
Maurice is recorded as being married but not for how long, and I can find no wedding certificate.
There is another Groom who is recorded as a nephew.

1913 my father was born. Graham Maurice Queen Charlottes hospital St Marylebone London.
Father Maurice Brett Butler Domestic Sutton (Surrey) UD.
Mother Elizabeth Brett formerly Francies.Egmont Brighton Road Sutton Surrey.

1915 my fathers brother, Leslie John born in the same hospital in St Marylebone.
Details the same except that Francis spelt this way.

I933 Maurice(Morris) John dies at 76 Eridge Road Croydon (The old workhouse infirmary I believe)
The death certificate has wife as F Brett.

1941 Leslie John killed in action, son of Maurice John and Elizabeth Frances Brett of Reigate Surrey

1943 my parents wedding certificate,
Father Morris John Brett-deceased Witnesses included Elizabeth Francis Brett.
Lots of information but so many Elizabeth Francis but without a marriage certificate I have no idea which one.

Thank you very much for these details, particularly William Brett I had not realised that his father was also in the London area.

Anita

Anita Report 29 Jan 2011 08:01

Let me begin by saying a very big thank you for the information I have already received.
I decided I had to find a new approach to deciding who my grandmother was. A marriage certificate would be one answer but I have run out of ideas. This was not an Irish marriage or a military one. I have considered the fact that both of them may have married previously, that Elizabeth may have been adopted, hence the reason for her always adding Francis to her name.
I have looked for Francis with different spellings, even Elizabeth Francis Francis. A death certificate would help but I sent for one that seemed just right and was not.

If Maurice Brett is recorded as married on the 1911 census, I figured his wife must be somewhere so I searched for Elizabeth Brett and found one that seemed about right, sadly not the one I wanted.
Are there any other avenues I can explore please.

Have you managed to find the marriage of Herbert Groom and Louisa (as in 1911 census)
I am assuming this could be a second marriage for Louisa, so she will not show under Brett, but no possibles in 1905/1906.
(Just trying to track down where Morris could be hiding)

Added:

Anita

Anita Report 29 Jan 2011 13:15

Difficult to be precise. Between 1956 and 1960. Either Redhill Hospital or Reigate at her home. These are very close and are both in Surrey. I think most likely the hospital as we , mum and I visited not long before she died.

What name is on the death between 1956-9

patchem Report 29 Jan 2011 14:09

Any possibility it was this death:
Frances E Brett
Death Registration Month/Year: 1959
Age at death (estimated): 82
Registration district: Surrey Mid Eastern
Inferred County: Surrey
Volume: 5g
Page: 204
(Could be male? Can you remember if she used Francis/Frances at all. or would it definitely be under Elizabeth?)

I think she should really be under Surrey South Eastern, just having problems finding her.
