Notice they were all called Walker in the 1911 census with Hague as a middle name.

That shows they went by Walker ordinarily. There wasn't really a formal way for ordinary people to change their names, for instance adoption (by the stepfather) didn't happen at the time.

It was even common for people to marry and die under their informal (stepfather's) surname, but we can see that Augusta had her child in 1917 under her own surname.

I hadn't even realised that they went by Walker. Thank you for pointing that out to me! Wish you could help me out with the whole family tree lol!

I didn't realise you couldn't adopt in those days.

Chrissiex - please can you tell me if you know the month in which Augusta L. White's death was registered? Trying to order the certificate but I can't find that information.

Thank you!

ah yes, the stupid Ancestry transcription doesn't give the quarter

........ I'm opening the image .........

Name: Augusta L White
Death Registration Month/Year: 1958 >> jul-aug-sep quarter
Age at death (estimated): 67
Registration district: Hull
Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding
Volume: 2a
Page: 251

the index doesn't say the month, just the quarter, so that's all you need

Nicola,

"Formal" adoption came into being in England/Wales in 1927. Formal being signed agreements, legal documents etc and being kept on record.

Thank you Chrissiex, just ordered the certificates now!

Thank you Ann. I always thought it had come into being in the 1800s.
