Hi Lynne & chrissiex
Firstly, thanks for all your searching - dont think Harold was a Farmer or Engineer (but cant be totally sure) he was listed as a 'Grocers Assistant' on the 1911 Census and was enlisted in the Army from 1915 - and discharged medically 29/12/1919 then must have gone home to my Grandma (Harold wasn't my Grandad, he was her first husband) and my Aunt Joyce was born in April 1921. She doesnt remember him at all and says he left when she was very small. Not sure where I go from here.
Thanks Michelle

his was the only Harold S Carter birth registered in 1892 or 1893

this birth is possible by age and the location is not wildly out of the range of possibility ?

Name: Harold S Carter
Death Registration Month/Year: 1956
Age at death (estimated): 63
Registration district: Bristol
Inferred County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 7b
Page: 259

it was in the first quarter of 1956

his birth was registered in the first quarter of 1893

if he was born in early 1893 and had already had his birthday when he died he would have been 63 at death in 1956

that is the best match I see, it could be worth getting the certificate to investigate

I would offer your aunt my family as cousins but my Carters from the middle 1800s were all from somewhere else, lol

edit ...... I just realised your aunt was born in Bristol

about brummijan's post ..... yes I think 'intended' occupation might have been farmer and that would have been why he was accepted for immigration possibly

I'm not saying this is your man, but just an example here. My great-grandfather worked as a carriage lamp maker from the age of 12. However, when he emigrated to Canada he put his occupation as farmer. Not sure why, maybe that was a more desirable occupation for an immigrant??

Hi chrissiex
Thanks for that. This may seem a really daft question - do I just go to Bristol Registry Office and get a copy of the Death Certificate?

have you searched trees here at this website ??

there are 4 people with the name Harold Carter born 1893 ... you and 3 others

two of them are born Cheltenham, yours and the other are born Worcester

oh rats, the one born Cheltenham was registered in first quarter 1894 so that one isn't just an inaccurate entry for yours

you are in touch with the other person who has yours I assume ?

I am in touch with the other tree - he's actually a cousin I didnt know I had but like me Harold Carter isnt his relative either so he didn't go any further with him, unlike me doing for my (half) aunt.
