Hi.
A while back I started looking into my Nan's family tree but got stuck. All the information about her was correct but when we ordered her birth certificate we were in for a shock. The women who we thought was her mother, Rebecca Matthews, wasn't her mother (we still don't know who Rebecca is and why she is in my grandmother's bible).
Infact her mother was Ellen Eliza Tomalin and her father had a completly different name from what his death was registered under. He was registered in 1960 (his death) as William Thomas Matthews but infact his daughter's birth certficate says he is called Thomas Matthews.
I then did a search on the 1911 census (I have no credits) and found that there were no family's with Florence, Thomas and Ellen living in. (She also had an older brother, Thomas. And the strangest thing is there is no marriage of Ellen and Thomas until 1913 even though they had there oldest son in 1902! Can anyone help with the 1911?
Regards,
Angela

It's a bit starnge that they had Thomas (1902) and then Florence (1905) before they married in 1913, isn't it ?

Angela

Angela Report 13 Mar 2011 16:50

No they were definetly from London or Essex

Is this William's death?

Name: William T Matthews
Death Registration Month/Year: 1960
> Age at death (estimated): 74 = dob c1886
Registration district: Colchester
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 4a
Page: 517

A lot of blanks to be filled in to get the info needed to help here. His DOB is one piece of info that's needed.

What about Rebecca's death? Where and when? It will help establish her date of birth.

Angela Report 13 Mar 2011 16:54

William Thomas Matthews died 05/03/1960 and Rebecca Matthews died 1957. Apparently in Rochford?

Oh, and, assuming your nan is deceaed or consents -- what's her name?? and when was she born, and where ...

My question might be whether you're quite sure you have the right birth certificate for your nan. ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Mar 2011 16:57

Right, Rebecca is the one I suspected:

Name: Rebecca Matthews
Death Registration Month/Year: 1957
Age at death (estimated): 67 = dob c1890
Registration district: Rochford
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 4a

Births to the Matthews-Tomalin couple after 1911:

Births Mar 1920
Matthews Joseph Tomalin Shoreditch 1c 61
Births Dec 1921
Matthews George Tomalin Shoreditch 1c 33

Are these familiar?

I might also suspect this one:

Births Dec 1912
Matthews Henry Tomlin Shoreditch 1c 37

(Other Matthews-Tomlin births are accounted for by other marriages.)

Angela

Angela Report 13 Mar 2011 16:59

I'm quite sure I have the right birth certificate, my father said that the dob matched.
Her full name is Florence Maud Matthews, born 1905 in Shoreditch.

thanks I know about Joseph and George (George died same year). And yes that is the death of Rebecca.

Angela

Angela Report 13 Mar 2011 17:05

If that Henry died as a child then yes he would be their child as only Florence, Joseph and Thomas survived to the knowledge of the family.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Mar 2011 17:07

That's what I was asking -- whether you knew about Joseph and George.

It doesn't help at all for you to know things if you don't tell us what they are!

Since you know about Joseph and George -- i.e. you have family knowledge of them, they're known to be family members? -- this seems to confirm that the Matthews-Tomalin couple is the right one.

I suspect that Rebecca was a later partner of your nan's father, and they possibly didn't marry. That was not at all unusual in the days before divorce was accessible.

As far as having children before a marriage, that wasn't unusual either. ;)

Now, the couple in the 1911 doesn't match your William Thomas for date of birth, per his death record. DOB on death record isn't always correct, but that's a bit of a large discrepancy.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Mar 2011 17:08

Do you have your nan's marriage certificate? Does she state her father's name and occupation on it? And her age?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Mar 2011 17:10

Oh, and as far as his name Thomas Matthews on your nan's birth certificate -- not at all uncommon for people to go by their middle name, and if she was registered by her mother, she might well have just given the name he was known by.

Sorry I should have mentioned them earlier :/

Is there any 1911 matches for Florence or Florence Maud Matthews born 1905 in Shoreditch or somewhere near Shoreditch ??
Many Thanks
