I was wondering if anyone can help I am looking for a Margaret Turner born in Castleford Yorkshire in 1868 .
I am afraid that I do not know who her parents where all I know is that she was illigitement and that her mother moved to York and married someone that was not Margaret's father.

Can you tell us what you *do* know about her?

You're descended from her? From what child? Can you show us Margaret in a census after she married? Who did she marry?

Etc. -- *everything you do know about her*, rather than what you don't know about her. ;)

More questions -- where does the info you have (her date and place of birth) come from?

Castleford is in Pontefract registration district. Only one Margaret Turner birth there 1866-1870:

If that's her -- the surname for a middle name is often the father's name when the parents weren't married.

Oops, I see Mike's post -- Castleford *was* in Pontefract reg dist, until 1862. ;)

There are no births for Margaret Turner in Castleford 1867 - 69.

Was Turner her married name ?
Stepfather's name?

This is what Iwas told by my Grandmother her daughter.
She was born as I said in Castleford in 1868.
She was illigitement.
Her mother married and lived in York
She married Henry Cranage in York
she died in Walsall Staffordshie 1938

I sent for her marriage cert and it said she married in1887 but her name was Margaret Spink fathers name James Spink.
ONthe 1891, 1901 and the1911 census it says she was born in York and that is all I know.
I was wondering if she took her stepfathers name of Spink or whether she was so young when her mother married that they changed her name from Turner To Spink

If she married as Spink, how do you know / what makes you think she was born as Turner?

Can you identify her birth for us anywhere?

As *I* said, how do you know she was born in Castleford? And that her name was Turner?

... Oh right, your grandmother told you ... so as I also said, are you descended from a child of Margaret? Is your grandmother a child of Margaret?

Do you have the birth certificate of one of her children showing her name as Turner?

I realize that, Mike, that Aberford is not in Castleford -- actually, it's in the censuses as Tadcaster reg dist -- it's just that this is the only available Margaret Spink, so rule her out/in is all we can do ...

And all we're working with is word of mouth from over a century ago.

This makes her year of birth 1866 or 1867, not 1868, if accurate.

Well, I guess my theory might be that Margaret's mother was Mary Ann Brown who adopted her stepfather's name Spink ... and maybe the real father was a James Turner ...

James Spink seems a little fictitious, and we all know how people made mash-ups for fathers when they married. ;)

Plausible theory but why would poster be asking for info on Margaret Turner if she was known as Spink from the age of 3, and married as Spink.
If mother unmarried , the child wouldn't be registered as Turner
Where does the knowledge of the name Turner come from ?
