Does anyone think it's possible that Moss and Alfred are the same person? (just to make things really difficult for us..)

A good bit of lateral thinking, Maureen -same age , place of birth and occupation.usually when Jewish people anglicise their names there is some similarity but not always -could be!

Amy Louisa married Francis Robert Ellis in 1899 West Ham as Taylor not Benjamin which I feel lends more weight to that being her (then )legal name

Hello all

Wow i'm amazed by your help and your speed

Thank you so so much

Can someone tell me how you got to Moss Benjamin from Alfred Taylor though Would he be a second husband and is there a way to find out if he either changed names or where his marriage to Catherine Amy can be found

Sorry to sound greedy but as you can imagine i'm now a little confused also why catherine amy's name is catherine mary if married to moss benjamin in 1876 which seems odd too

thank you again really

How did you find Catherine Grubb

Alex

Alex Report 30 Mar 2011 17:39

I know that Amy Louise Taylor was Married to Frances Robert Ellis for sure and her children are correct as I'm in touch with family still. Excuse my ignorance but why would Alfred anglicise his name? Would he have to do that legally i.e. change it?

As far as the family is aware we have no Jewish in our family but always had our suspicions. I'm literally floored...

As for Catherine Amy, I have her death certificate already and its says she was a widow to Alfred Taylor as husband (general dealer). She died on 22 Oct 1915 in Shadwell. This was in the family belongings so must have been hers.

I am now dying to know if Moss and Alfred are the same person. All help welcome thank you again.

I'm being stupid, I also have a death certificate for Alfred Taylor!
Registered in Whitechapel, Mile End New Town in 1906
The informant is C.A Taylor of 9 Sarah Street Shadwell.
He's named as a Box dealer and was 49 at time of death. I Presume this must be him?

Hi Alex,

I have no idea if Moss and Alfred are the same person. (or even how to prove or disprove that theory)

It would be a good idea to get Maude's birth certificate to see if that holds any clues:
Births Dec 1888 (>99%)

BENJAMIN Maud Adelaide St. Geo. East 1c 359

(Actually,I'd get a few of the other children's as well...).

I can send you the image of Moss and Catherine's marriage cert from Ancestry if you PM me with your e-mail address.

Alex
Many Jewish people anglicised their names to avoid prejudice.Unless Moss did this with a public announcement in the papers you wil be unlikely to prove it. But there is no doubt about Catherines marriage to Moss Benjamin and given that he does not appear as such after 1881 and does not feature in deaths it does seem a likely proposition
As Maureen says the childrens birth certs might throw some light -tho not necessarily

Hello all,

Just wanted to say a big thank you again. I received some certificates for the Benjamin family today and particularly a death certificate for 2 month old Reginald Benjamin. Interestingly he was born at the same address as Alfred Taylor and Catherine Amy Taylor. I can only conclude therefore that Alfred and Moss are one and the same person. Unfortunately Reginald died of congenital syphilis which isn't very pleasant!

Thank you so much again.

Kind regards,

Alex
