Hi can any one help me with this

John Davis first turns up on 1861 Census living with Mother Rose Ann Davis widow born Falsegrave Scarborough age 30 . William Davis son born Scarborough age 2 .John Davis age 10 born Ireland .

1871/81/91 /1901 he states Dublin as place of birth and dobs vary from 1847 to 1850.all in Scarborough

1911 census he is born Templemore Dublin age 63 .

He died in Scarborough 1911 age 64

Rose Ann marries William Brackenbury 1865 Scarborough and dies 1870 Scarborough .

John Davis marries Diana Thorpe 1872 Scarborough .

I sent for this mrg cert and Wlm Brackenbury is listed as Johns father .and he gives his age as 23 .

I know Wlm Brackenbury can not be his father as he was living in Norfolk at the time of Johns birth .

Templemore Dublin was a British Army Garrison..

I have tried the LSD site and looked for Marriages for a Davis and a Rose Ann in Scarborough .

Has any one any suggestions as to what I can do next to find out abt Johns birth

Thankyou for taking the time to read this

Was William Brackenbury Johns stepfather?

I would assume that’s why he is on the marriage certificate...he would have been young when his mom remarried and probably referred to him as his father

Lynda

Yes Wlm Brackenbury was his stepfather Rose ann mrd him in 1865 .

As I mentioned above John seems to be being looked after by his stepfather

Yes that is John , his stepfather Wlm Brackenbury remarried after Rose Anns death and John lived with him until he mrd Diana Thorpe in 1872 .

I am at a loss to find out who his father was.

I did find a death for a John Davis 1860 Scarborough and thought this could be his father .

Thankyou for looking .

Have you bought the birth cert for William? This might identify the father

Maddie

Maddie Report 3 Apr 2011 14:42

Gee

No , ,but I did a search of Rose Anns born in Scarborough circa 1830 and found a Rose Ann Fate / Tate born Scarborough 1828 .

I was going to send for her mrg cert to Wlm Brackenbury ,but That wont give me her maiden name.

I tried military births on Anscetry [ for John ] but no luck .

Iam going to order Wlm Davis birth cert later today

Thank Ginny , if John was born in 1847 Rose Farrer would have only been 14 when he was born . ,it's such a puzzle .

Thankyou for helping

Gee

Gee Report 3 Apr 2011 14:52

They did round down ages by up to 5 years on the 1841 census, so Rose could have been old enough

John was 10 on the 1861 census making his birth about 1751?

Gee

Gee Report 3 Apr 2011 14:53

Now this might be very interesting?

Lynda

Lynda Report 3 Apr 2011 14:56

Oh that is interesting , I wonder if she was an unmarried mother and mrd

Thankyou Ginny

Lynda

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Maybe Rose got pregnant had the baby and was shuffled off to Ireland out of the way?

Might be worth getting that birth certificate

Lynda

Lynda Report 3 Apr 2011 15:08

The one forJohn Farrer , yes maybe I could try that , Im ordering the brothers today , but dont hold much hope.
I have a feeling they had different fathers and thats a good theory re her being sent to Ireland .
