Hi,
I have tracked down a marriage I have been lookig for:-

Mary Ballantine 20 to George Oliver 33 in Gortin, Lower Bodoney, Tyrone in 1909.

Mary's father is given as John Ballantine (Farmer, Cockatanty, Lower Bodoney).

Can anyone help who has access to Irish records to find Mary's birth records or any other information on this Ballantine family. Obviously it would be great to find Mary's mother's details etc.

Hope someone can help

Robert,

You can check the Irish 1901 and 1911 census for free at The national Archives.

You haven't given an age for Mary when she married.

This probably could be the family but I'm not sure about Mary Anne
From Above,
Name: Mary Ann Ballantine
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 04 Mar 1879
Birthplace: Crockatanty, Tyrone, Ireland

My Mary was 20 in 1909 so her birth year was c1889.

Also noticed from marriage cert. that one witness is Martha Ballantine - sister perhaps?

Same family in 1911 - 10 children born and 8 living so I am wondering if they weren't all home for the 1901?

Maura Report 15 Apr 2011 14:42

From the census rotgatherer found there's birth's for all these children on

http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/

Margaret & a Mary Anne born 1892 Gortin

Parents John Ballantine & Matilda McIvor

Robert

Robert Report 15 Apr 2011 16:10

Although no Mary showing up in 1901 census (and she is married by 1911 one) this family does have a Martha and also from Maura's post John and Matilda did have a daughter Mary..

I wonder if Oaghmonicroy (Glenlark, Tyrone) is near Cockatanty?

Bob

Forename : John Reseal Date :

Robert

Robert Report 15 Apr 2011 17:00

Thats very interesting though Maura. That is presumably transfer of the estate from father to son. £246 seems a reasonable sum for those days.

I am beginning to thnk there may be several John Ballantine's in that area!

Would the death certificate for 2/10/1902 give wife's maiden name (I'm in Scotland and it would here).

No Robert, it only give you

age

date of death
occupation

Mary Ann could of lied about her age, and the family that batmansdaughter found in 1901 census could be hers as there is a birth for a Hester Ballantine for a John Ballantine & Mary Charles

Robert

Robert Report 15 Apr 2011 17:18

Hi Maura,

'....could be hers as there is a birth for a Hester Ballantine for a John Ballantine & Mary Charles '

Am I missing something, how does that say there is a Mary in that family?

I know that people did indeed alter their ages it it suited.
regards
Bob

Maura,

Yes of course, so much info I had missed the mothers name on that one. Yes maybe she was older than she said on the marriage certificate.

Looks like the Ballantine family had lived there for many years;

Ireland, Griffith’s Valuation, 1848-1864
about John Ballantine
Occupier: John Ballantine
Lessor: Edward C Knox
COUNTY: Tyrone
Barony: Strabane, Upper
Parish: Bodoney Lower
Townland: Crockatanty
OS Page Numbers: 19

Description of tenement; House, offices and land

Also listed with John is James and William Ballantine......... and a couple of doors down is John Farquhar!!!

Now I think John Ballantine is the owner of this unoccupied house;

Ireland, Griffith’s Valuation, 1848-1864
about Unoccupied
Occupier: Unoccupied
Lessor: John Ballantine

There is also a "View historical map" on Ancestry for Crockatanty....... if you would like me to email it to you Bob just send me a private message (click onto my name) and I'll forward a copy to you.
