The John in the 1830 Tithes that Erin give you would not be your John as he wasn't born until 1832, but his father's was Joseph who is there in Crockatanty and the John & William could be his brother's.

Hi,
The person's mother was the daughter of George Oliver and Mary Ballantine - Mary Agnes Oliver.

However, Mary Agnes was brought up by George Olivers elder sister, Agnes, as Mary Oliver (Ballantine) died in 1911 (2 years after marrying George).

So, everything about the Ballantines is new information.

Bob
PS see my new thread on George Oliver in Ireland.

Eringobragh1916 Report 16 Apr 2011 10:49

Bob....The tithes were paid by the Landholder so it may be there were other John's in the area but were not the actual Landholder...
I am not sure exactly what the person your helping wants
Is it just to determine Co.Tyrone origins ?
Have they any primary source info.regarding the Ballentines and Olivers....

Robert

Robert Report 16 Apr 2011 10:15

Hi Eringobragh1916,
Thanks for this additional information.

My feeling is we have got back to an extended family of Ballantines living in the Crockantanty area. Many John's and many farmers. Although from your last post there was only one John living in Crockatanty.

I think that's as close as we will get with the records on line.

It may take someone who has original family records (family Bible or other records) to take this forward.

Anyway, the person who asked me to look for the origins of her birth mother's family will be very happy to trace back to this township in Tyrone.

cheers
Bob

Eringobragh1916 Report 15 Apr 2011 20:45

Bob in answer to your query re Oaghmonicroy
It was at the time in question a Townland of some 750 acres in the Civil Parish of Bodoney Lower..Poor Law Union of Gortin... Barony of Strabane Upper
Crockatanty was a Townland of some 470 acres..same CP and PLU

So although you have BMD listed for Gortin etc the family may have come from any of the Townlands within the Civil Parish/PLU.
There were 47 Townlands in the CP of Bodoney Lower.

Crockantanty was in Bodoney Upper (1796)
The Ballentines were listed there at the time...but were to be found in other areas also.

Can't find a marriage for a Ballantine & Martha that would fit, Martha could be a cousin.

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 15 Apr 2011 18:05

Maura,

Could one of the Ballantine boys have married a Martha??? Just because she is on the marriage cert as a witness doesn't mean she was a Ballantine by birth... it could be by marriage???
