Do you have your grandmother's marriage certificate which would give her fathers' name?

hi Lynne,
i forgot to mention that gladys married in 1945 in huddersfield to walter wood. both of her parents were dead at that time. She and walter had a child in 1930 (my mother). walter is just one more person that i can't find. I have found their marriage record

Thanks for your input Lynne. I'm having some trouble with the website. i made a concerted effort to find these family members in Jan. and kept running into dead ends. I did find out that emma wood married unknown clough. -and that's where i gave up. earlier today i found a 1901 census record with all the children's names, but the birth date was too early for Gladys (1898). The parents were James and Adelina Wood. Gladys was a weaver in Huddersfield from her early teens until she retired. Her permission to work at an early age was signed by a parent with an "x". I remember seeing this document many years ago. I'd love to have more information to give to my mother about her family. She was quite excited about the prospect of learning more about her family. Chris

Are you sure that Gladys was born in 1903?
Do you have the marriage certificate for Gladys and Walter?
Does it give the names of their fathers (even if they are deceased)?

If you don't already have it, you need their marriage cert.

Marriages Sep 1945 (>99%)

Wood Gladys Wood Huddersfield 9a 1000
Wood Walter Wood Huddersfield 9a 1000

As they didn't marry until 1945 and your mother was born 1930 it would appear Walter may have been married before.

The cert should give you their correct ages and father's names.

and perhaps her husband?

The marriage for James and Adelina - just trying to find if Adelina's maiden surname rings any bells with your Mum to establish if perhaps Gladys was economical with the truth about her age.

I have just checked the original 1911 census for Olive Wood (1893) and it actually looks more like Alice.

Thanks Christine, Rootgatherer and Lynne,
Yes, Walter was married previously. I would like to find out more about this family, but have nothing to start with...yet. Gladys emigrated to Canada in the 1960s and died in London Ontario in the 1980s. I do know that her parents died when she was young and that her mother died first. Do you think it might be possible that Adelina is her mother and that she had twins Alice and Gladys and that Gladys died between 1901 and 1903 and that a later daughter (b.1903) was also called Gladys. I'll have alook at the 1911 census and research further. You have given me some clues that have potential. Thanks again. Chris

Christine, I think that there was only 1 Gladys in that family. You really need to buy that marriage certificate otherwise this is all speculation. Come back and let us know the details from the marriage certificate when you get it please.

Just in the passing John William Wood on the 1901 census is deaf.

Checking on Freebmd, Gladys is not a twin. I think Alice's age has been mistranscibed on the 1901 but it does look like a 3 on the actual image. I would agree with Lynn I think the 1911 Olive is actually Alice who would have been 8 years old in 1901.

Hi Lynne,
i missed this earlier. The Clough family in 1911 is definately the right one.
Wow! I'm well on my way to solving mysteries now. Chris

Thankyou all for your help previously. I have now got the marriage certificate for Walter Wood and Gladys Wood. A recent visit to my Mother confirmed that Walter was married previously. His first wife is named on his marriage certificate to Gladys. Her name was Annie Elizabeth Edwards. Walter and Annie were married in Leeds in St. Peter's Parish Church on Dec 3, 1916. I had tried to order a copy of the marriage cert. and was informed that the information I had did not match the records??? My Mother recalls having a day out with Walter (her Father) and 2 other children, a boy and a girl older than herself and she has always wondered who they were. Now she thinks perhaps she had half siblings and would like to know more. So, I am once again at a dead end. I'm looking for Walter and Annie's parents and any children they may have had. Walter was born 1893 in Oldham Lancs. I'm estimating Annie's birth about 1894.
