I am looking for information about the Smith family who lived in the small hamlet of Fulwell Oxfordshire in 1917

Aunt Smith signed herself as A Smith saying that her son Tom was serving in the war in France

Her brother in law was Thomas Edward Smith or possibly could be Thomas George Smith
His parents were Miriam Hall and Robert Smith of Shipton Oxfordshire

Thomas was born in c 1857 and migrated to New Zealand but do not know when. He married in NZ in 1876

1911 census has four pages of Smiths in the Chipping Norton district........

Thankyou everyone. I know that the info is flimsy that I have given you to work with but that is all I have and no live descendants here in NZ with any Information

Thomas just disappeared after doing two years in jail in Napier Prison NZ ( 1893-1895) for bigamy And it was kept very hush hush so no one really knows anything. The letter signed A Smith was a breakthrough for us

You say that Thomas married in 1876........that would have made him only about 18, if your estimate of his birth year is correct.

BUT..............as shown above, there was no Thomas with the parents you name on the 1861 or 1871 censuses

Do you have the cert for the 1876 marriage?

There is this baptism in the Shipton u Wychwood transcripts:-

29 Feb 1852-Thomas George SMITH s Robert & Miriam

Cannot see a buriel for him between 1852 and 1861 (there are a lot of Smiths !) and cannot see him in the 1861 census

THis sounds good Elizabeth. And it matches except on his marriage certificate he says he is 31 in 1888. Five years is quite a lot to be out I would think! Or maybe not?

He came out to New Zealand prior to 1876 when he married first time around

Was his second wife much younger than him?


If so, he may have 'trimmed' his age a little

His second wife was 36 and he says he is 31 on the marriage certificate.

There is just so many unknowns about this guy - and a family here in NZ that are hoping for some answers. That is why the newly found letter from Aunt A Smith from Fulwell has rekindled the questions

I wonder if he came out here to NZ as a small lad prior to 1861 census
