PLEASE SEE END OF POST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - CAN YOU STILL HELP?

I am totally baffled by Edward Collins whereabouts before his marriage in 1887.

Can anyone help me?

This is the information I have -

D.O.B - abt 1852 (1891,1901,1911 census)

P.O.B - France (1911 census)
Foreign Subject/France (1901 census)
St Heland (1891 census)

MARRIAGE - 21st Aug 1887, Great Yarmouth to HANNAH OXBOROUGH

RESIDENCES - Lived in Great Yarmouth throughout his married life

CHILDREN - James, Amelia, Ethel, Ernest, Bertie, Elizabeth, Edith, Rosy, Louise, Alice, Nell, Mary Arthur.

NOTE: In all censuses he was recorded as Deaf & Dumb.

ADDITIONAL INFO THAT MAY HELP:-

There is a 1861 census in Birmingham for a Edwin Collins (ages 8) that was recorded as deaf and dumb from birth. His father names is Sylvannus Collins. But it says they were all born in B'ham.
I cannot connect my Edward to this edwin if they are indeed the same people.

Also, I think Edward may have been married before he wed Hannah Oxborough in 1887. There is a 17 yr age gap between them. She was born in 1869. Edward was still having sprogs well into his 50's

I just cannot find anything. I am limited with the info I cant search as I do not have an overseas subscription with ancestry....

Hope someone can help
Many thanks in advance :-)

First question - do you have his marriage cert to Hannah? You could do with his father's name.

I think the 1891 birthplace is actually Ireland?#

EDIT sorry, delete that thought! I'm wrong, it looks more like St. Heland, apologies.

I thought this to BrummieJan but I can't work out what the word/letters are before.
I this is the case... im confused to why he is recorded as French in the others.
I know his wife on the 1891 census is recorded as Anna but all the other details match the following records x

EDIT - Even so, a st helend in France does not exsist :-S

The fmp transcription has his place of birth as St Helena, a British colony in the South Atlantic famous as a place of exile for Napoleon.

Despite the above marriage- nice find by the way! - I would still be inclined to purchase the marriage cert. If nothing else you might find the witnesses hold a clue, and there might be an address which helps.

Erika - and anybody else! - just indulge me and check out that peculiar 1881 census I posted above.

Suggesting it is worth checking out for these reasons -

deaf & dumb
birthplace
location
occupation
middle name hard to read, not sure if Colley or not, need better eyes than mine to exclude a variation of Collins!

Stranger things have been known!
