I've been looking for a while now,Jan. It's obviously him in 1881,but the relationships are hard to determine.

In 1891 John is shown as John Prince :
1891 census transcription details for: 7, Pleasant Place, Beaconsfield Road, Great Yarmouth

Living with a Mrs Woodcock and just a few doors away from Edward.

in 1901 he's back to being John Woodcock. I lose him after that.

I agree about the relationships, very strange! Glad you agree it must be him, though not sure it solves a great deal. I can't see any easy way round this one.

Many thanks for helping me today. I think I will have to buy the marriage cert as it looks like there's no way round it.

ALAS!! I HAVE DISCOVERED THE MARRIAGE CERT IMAGE THAT WAS GIVEN BY 'MAUREENINNY'

THIS IS THE LINK
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11667-25215-1?cc=1416598&wc=662011

AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW - A WITNESS IS NON OTHER THAN 'JOHN PRINCE' WHO APPEARED IN THE 1881 CENSUS GIVEN BY BRUMMIEJAN. THIS IS DEFINATLEY MY EDWARD FOR SURE!!!

HIS FATHER WAS INDEED ALSO EDWARD COLLINS AND HE WAS A SAILOR

IT STILL DOESNT EXPLAIN WHERE 'ST HELENA' COMES INTO THIS WHEN 1881,1901,1911 CENSUSES SAY HE WAS FROM FRANCE :-S

ANY ADVICE? :-D

wisechild Report 25 Oct 2011 07:31

Was his father perhaps in the army, which could account for him being born in St Helena even though it was a French territory.
For many years after the exile of Napoleon to St Helena, there was a British army presence on the island.
Doesn´t account for him saying he´s French though,Possibly his mother was from St Helena which would have made her French.

Look at the ages on that 1881 Census!!

Elizabeth just cannot be the mother of John Prince Woodcock!

and I've looked at the image ...... they have been transcribed correctly!
