Lyho47 Report 12 Jun 2011 21:00

Am trying to trace Lewis Farrell and his spouse Esther or Ellen Bellew. Through rootsireland.ie I have found their son William baptised on the 18 April 1841 in the Aglish RC Parish, County Mayo. Aglish, which is now known as Castlebar. However, nowhere can I find any information about Lewis and Esther. I've searched Griffiths Valuation and identified two Lewis Farrells, one in the Townland Abbeycartron, Parish Templemichael in Co. Longford and the other in the Townland Castlepollard Market Square, Parish Rathgarve in Co. Westmeath. Unfortunately, that's all that Griffiths tells me. I would have thought that I'd gleaned enough information to track them down but there is no trace of them in any County on the rootsireland website and I don't know what to do next. Any advice appreciated.

Thank you for this Ann. Don't know what to think. Could be a link. Which census year is this?

Lyho47

Lyho47 Report 12 Jun 2011 21:43

The 1881 census record, I have. The William Farrell recorded there is my grandfather, the son of Lewis Farrell and Esther Bellew. Definitely no link with the other two 1881 census records.
I guess we've dried on ideas Ann, so thank you very much for your searches on my behalf. I didn't expect much response to this conundrum so was happy to hear from you. Thank you very much.
p.s. could you just let me know which census the Esther Farrell and O'Connells was.

AnnCardiff Report 12 Jun 2011 22:52

they are all 1881 - which I have put at the top of the entry

Thank you Ann. Clearly then, not the right person if son was born in 1842. That Esther would have only been 10 years of age at that time. The search goes on!

Is Robert Farrell b.1845 Co Mayo related? from rootsireland

Lyho47

Lyho47 Report 13 Jun 2011 14:44

Hi Pam. how exciting-could be! The reason I say this is because I recently found on William's (born 1842) death certificate i.e. my great grandfather, son of Lewis and Esther which included the name of the informant. This was one Emma Fairclough who was a married niece, daughter of Fergus Farrell born in 1836 in Ireland (no County specified). I found Emma Faircloughs name on two other Genes trees and sent message but one didn't reply and the other hasn't opened the message as yet-it's been a while now. Since Farrell isn't a typical surname for County Mayo (mainly Longford ), Robert could be a brother, so will pay my 5 euros and check it out. Am very grateful for the information and to you for you taking the time to search on my behalf. Thank you so much.

Lyho47 Report 13 Jun 2011 15:24

Euros paid and bingo! Well done super sleuth! Robert has the same parents. Interestingly though, on Roberts details, mother is recorded as Ellen not Esther-possibly poor handwriting so not sure which is her name. Still confused though as to why I'm not able to trace Lewis and Esther/Ellen or the brother Fergus born 1836. Once again, thank you soooo much Pam. I realise that there's been a delay between your message and my reply, so hope that you see this.

Hi Lynn, looking at irishroots again.
Looks like Lewis and Ellen married in Co. Meath 1829/30 had several children (Possibles - Mary, James, Richard, Lewis) then moved to Co. Mayo (Children: William and Robert. Possibly visited Meath and had Philip.) The dates are in sequence from Mary (1831) through to Robert.

Another possible child from 1901 census Martin.

1901 irish census

Farrell Ellen 87 Female Mother (of Martin) RC Co.Mayo

Unfortunately Ellen is not found on 1911 census.

Lyho47 Report 13 Jun 2011 22:26

You are a star Pam. How come I can't find anything on irishroots??The only Ellen that I found was married in 1829 in County Meath, but not to Lewis Farrell. Am now hoping that I'm barking up the right tree (can one say that!?) as I need to find a link with Fergus Farrell born 1836 since his daughter is recorded as niece on William's (born1841) death certificate dated 1903. Thank you so much for all your help.

Hi Lynn

What do you think?
Church Marriage Ferral Luis 1835 Co. Mayo
Church Marriage Bellew Ester 1835 Co. Mayo

Therefore, last post would be incorrect.

Only Robert and William showing as children.

Now for Fergus.

Hi Pam, don't know what to say other than you are unbelievable!!! How do you do this? Could well be, as I know with Irish searches you're advised that spellings change. Without Fergus though, I can't be sure that these are the correct parents. Will keep digging. Thank you so very much AGAIN.

Thank you Pam, had seen the census info and am confident of link between Emma and William but can't establish Fergus link with the William in Ireland. It's so frustrating!! Have tried the Fergis spelling on Roots too and still nothing. p.s as an aside, I was informed some time ago that Fergus died by falling into a canal and I know from his death certificate that poor William died of exhaustion in the Wigan Union Workhouse. What a happy family history!! I may be wise not to delve any further!!!! Once again, thank you so much for the help you've given me and the time taken in doing so. It's very much appreciated. Lynn

Since Fergus died by accident, information should be in the local newspaper. That would be a good place to look. You never know there might be an obituary for him naming relatives. Pam
