Vivien Report 15 Aug 2011 17:41

their daughter (my grandmother) was born in Edinburgh,
Children were
James
Thomas
Charles
John
Bartholomew
Agnes (my Grandmother)
Ellen
Susan
On grandmothers birth certificate it names her father as Charles Quinn coal miner
Mother Sarah Kelly
Marriage is stated as 17th July 1895
so was definitely married by the time of 1901 census

Vivien

Vivien Report 15 Aug 2011 17:44

So ...Charles the father is missing in 1911
so are Ellen b1903
and Susan b1902
maybe they stayed behind....
the address on grandmothers birth certificate is for Cowgate Edinburgh which I believe was a notoriously overcrowded slum area, where the majority of the city's Irish immigrant community was based.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 16 Aug 2011 10:44

Maybe then he is the other registration then .theres two Charles Quinn reg at approx the same time

Name: Charles Quinn
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1877
Registration district: Lanchester
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 326

he would show as b1878 on census.

and this one
Name: Charles Edward Quinn
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1878
Registration district: Auckland
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 198
now if this one is the son of Edward and Alice, which may seem likely with his second name being Edward, The your Charles must be the other one.

I havent been able to establish which reg district Leadgate would have come under.

Leadgate is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north-east of Consett. The Roman road Dere Street runs straight through the middle of Leadgate.

The place-name 'Leadgate' is first attested in 1590 and derives from the Old English 'hlidgeat', which means 'swing-gate'.[1]

Leadgate was the home of the workers and staff of the Eden colliery which opened in 1844, and was closed on the 18 July 1980. It was also home to many working for the Consett Iron Company (about 2 miles away) and which closed during the Premiership of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

Leadgate now stands as a small village with a close-knit community. Plans to regenerate the area have been on the local councils' planning board for some time and improvements are being made.

The coast-to-coast cycle route runs through Leadgate and follows the path of the former Stanhope and Tyne railway. The last train ran on the line on 17 March 1984.[2]

St Ives is the Parish Church. 1st Leadgate is the Leadgate scout group
