Emma,
You need to buy birth and marriage certificates, checking that you have the correct people, and slowly work your way back.
The birth certificates will have Father's name, and Mother's maiden name, and the marriage certificate will have Fathers' names (plus ages, occupations, addresses etc).
Are any parents/grandparents still alive, or aunts, uncles etc to ask for extra information?
Write down on a very large piece of paper your tree, with what you have found out so that you know where you are and who you need information about.

I think you are trying to do too much, too soon.

You should concentrate on one line at a time........especially as you are new to this, and unfamiliar with how to search.

Flick

Flick Report 15 Jan 2012 21:50

Do you know when these people died?

If we can find their deaths, we can get an idea of when they were born

Flick

Flick Report 15 Jan 2012 21:46

Is the name HUTT.......or HUNT?

You have given both surnames.................

Have you tried looking on freebmd for the births of these people?

Emma, there are many people here more than willing to help you but we need a name as a starting point. I don't understand your reluctance to even give us one name. You did ask for help, help us to help you.

Hi Emma

the best place to start is with your parents then do one side at a time. ie father, grandparents g grandparents etc

if you go off in other directions too soon it will all become confusing.

You can start inputting to your own tree on this site which will enable you check back on the family you have found.

plenty of good sites with free info online and once you start concentrating on one particular part of the family you will find it much easier and if you get stuck with a certain person people on here are willing to help, but can't help if you dont know what help you need if that make sense

sites to use to check marriages births deaths etc (you will need to buy certificates to confirm these though)

freebmd
familysearch.org have lots of records which are free to search too and some census returns
